Another good performance that ended with some errors and disappointment.
Last year it was Cresswell, now its Aguerd.
We will meet Lazio and or Villarreal, can we do better?

Fwiw, I think the criticism of Antonio for the 2 'missed' chances has been well ott, they were hardly gimmies were they. Many strikers miss all the time when still having the keeper to beat and the first one he was only in that position in the first place by creating it himself by cleaning out Martinez. He's not a striker is he, so don't expect him to finish like one.

Stuff Fulham, it’s those fishy folk from Grimsby I’m hoping make it to Wembley now.

Let's all support Fulham
they would have won on being 1 up and ended up by winning by 3 goals easily.

"Don't think its luck. They know what they are are doing. That put a team out they think might be good enough to beat us and if it isn't working they just increase the firepower by subbing it on from the bench."

exactly.. game management. They controlled this game, and won when they wanted to. That's how it's done.

We weren’t “sitting back and inviting pressure”. We were being forced back. It’s what nearly always happens when you play away to a “big club” and you are level or in the lead.

But they know it's going to happen, so why not counter that? How you react is a choice. We were not "forced back". We decided to sit back as we were worried by their attack. We didnt have to do that.

I remember when Leicester won the league and one of the reasons was they always had 2 outlets for any attack. Vardy and someone else on the half way line. Having 2 on the half way line especially 2 players with pace (Bowen/Antonio) will always give us an outlet that scares any opposition trying to overload on us.
We also have stopped playing it out from the back, something we used to do a lot of at the beginning of Moyes' reign. We need that because we cannot keep giving the opposition the ball back.

There are ways to counteract everything in football. That's what coaches are meant to do. Find a way to solve problems, not just say, oh they are a big team they can do whatever they want. No they cant!

By my calculations that's three times out of the last four matches against Man U we've gone into the final minutes level only to end up losing. Sick of them!

First hour we were the better side (even when Casemiro came on), only fault was that we didn't punish them enough before they threw on the rest of their big guns.

Hope we thump them to ruin any lingering title hopes they have when we next play them.

It’s probably down to money I assume they would receive a extra payment for being in the first team squad.

What two or three chances did we have at 0-1?

There was Antonio's greedy shot, but I don't recall us creating any other decent chances.

My memory is that we had three chances all game. The two that Antonio woefully fluffed and the goal we scored (which I categorise as lucky as it looked like it should have been ruled out for a throw in from the replays).

Does anyone have an clue why Moyes decides to have 1 less sub than other teams we play?

It happened last night, and again recently in another game. Surely a YOOF could warm the bench with the other YOOFS on there that he refuses to play?

Two main failures last night as they were there for the taking. .
1. Antonio. Absolutely knew he was going to fluff his lines in one on one. Had chances and instead of passing or finessing he blasts it at Di Gae; much like he has done in similar situations in the past.
2. Moyes, should have subbed Antonio at the end of the first half, leaving Antonio on to either lose the ball and make no significant impact totally weakened the team. Keeping Antonio on not only stymied any goal threat we might have it also put pressure on the defence which ultimately told for them. Why put Divin Muamba on the bench if he won't be used? I am not sure his development will be helped by watching Antonio make a fool of himself, watching the team get pushed further and further back and seeing that the current manager does not have the wits to change what isn't working.

”Quite why Moyes thought sitting back and inviting pressure at 0-1 and 1-1 would work away to a big 6 team when it seldom does is beyond me. We should have gone gung ho for the second goal when it was 0-1”

Just a few points on that.

1. Although I wouldn’t call it “Gung Ho” we did try and go for a second at 0-1 and had 2 or 3 chances to do it.

2. We weren’t “sitting back and inviting pressure”. We were being forced back. It’s what nearly always happens when you play away to a “big club” and you are level or in the lead.

An onslaught and a period of pressure is always going to happen at some point when you play away to the big teams. They have better players so it’s inevitable.

It was basic errors at the back and missed chances up front (as mentioned) that cost us in the end. Not because we were “Deliberately sitting back”

We had several chances to get the second goal and failed. If we had they would have brought on the big guns earlier.

Moyes for you. He's like a rabbit caught in headlights when up against superior opposition. When they inevitably turned it on, he didn't react and impotently watched it unfold. We have seen before he pays too much respect to big teams.

I am not jumping on the 'Moyes out' band wagon with that comment though as although there are clearly better managers none of them want to come here and until we change the dynamics that created that situation we have little to gain by getting rid of him.

I tend to agree with that. As supporters we tend to get fixated with how our team are performing and downplay the performance of the opposition.

Manchester United were woeful in the first half. I have not seen a bigger waste of money than that Antony geezer they payed £80 million for. Their other £80 million donkey Maguire started and doesn't get in their league team any more. McTominey, Lindelorf etc. - all shit and can't get in their first team normally.

They inevitably upped their game after we went 0-1 up and they brought on the big guns.

Quite why Moyes thought sitting back and inviting pressure at 0-1 and 1-1 would work away at a big six team, when it seldom does, is beyond me.

We should have gone gung ho for the second goal when it was 0-1.

Don't think its luck. They know what they are are doing. That put a team out they think might be good enough to beat us and if it isn't working they just increase the firepower by subbing it on from the bench. That photo of Rashford grabbing his shirt as soon as we went one-nil says it all. We think we were closer than we were.

No we don't- I think i can recall at least three winners for them in the last 3-5 mins of a game, in the last five times we've played them. Happened twice last season.

Antonio showed why he is not a striker, should have scored at least one of those chances, both were pathetic attempts.
Overall thought we were unlucky again against these cunts, never seem to get much luck against them.

Re: ⚽ Man Utd v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Despite my criticism of his presence in the box, I did really like how Areola looked to get rid of the ball quickly and set us going forward. Constant source of frustration this season has been the keeper holding onto it for ages when there are options, allowing the opposition to just trot back into position leaving us no chance of getting any sort of attacking impetus.

Re: ⚽ Man Utd v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Moyes fault, Antonio is a right winger not a striker. Bilic thought he was a right back. Feel sorry for Antonio he has done all he can, record striker and yet not his position.

Areola has always worried me. Makes some excellent saves good distribution but suspect from set pieces. Should have punched clear first and didn't dive for second. Dropped the ball and was lucky to get another chance to collect it.

How are Dawson and Diop getting on?

Re: ⚽ Man Utd v West Ham - Official Match Thread
It's not that we lost. I can accept that. What rankles is that we had enough opportunity to beat them and didn't - same old story. We can all see the issue is poor decisions from the bench and in front of goal. Frustrating!

El Scorchio 1:39 Thu Mar 2
Re: ⚽ Man Utd v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Can't really fault the line up and intent. We got forward and actually tried to win, which is the main thing. Played some good stuff too.

Couple of really poor choices by Antonio (second one in particular was absolutely maddening and really selfish) and a terrible bit of keeping by Areola aside, we could easily have won that or been out of sight before they scored.

I see Aguerd got some pelters. Harsh. He's done so much more good than bad so let's give him a break, and I put the blame for the first goal squarely on Areola. He's looked really dodgy coming for crosses a few times in the past and they clearly realised they could put him under pressure. It's a weakness he needs to work on as it was a pathetic attempt at a punch and teams will be keying in on it.

We may be out of the cup but I am optimistic that if we carry on playing like that, with that sort of intent, that we will be absolutely fine in the league and go far in Europe.
