James Tomkins is your player of the month for January. It is no real surprise that a defender has won given that we have kept two clean sheets in the last four games.

Tomkins has been in excellent form after an indifferent season. With Matthew Upson beside him he looks much more comfortable and confident and his performances in recent weeks have been very impressive.

The pick of the performances was away at Villa when we had to be on top of our game defensively. Tomkins put in arguably his best performance of the season up against some tricky forwards.

Tomkins continues to develop and I feel he is getting better the more games he plays. That Villa game also was poignant due to Villa having James Collins as their centre half and Tomkins has been effectively his replacement.

So when Collins was getting dragged about by 18 year old Frank Nouble, it was Tomkins who put in a solid display which saw him named Man of the match by many from the media.




Runner up is Tomkins' centre half partner and club captain Matthew Upson who since his return from injury has been in fine form.

It is no coincidence to me that as Tomkins and Upson played more games together we stopped shipping multiple goals in every game.




In third place is midfielder Valon Behrami who continues to establish himself as a firm fans favorite.

Good write up, Vincent.

No real stand out player for me. I think over recent games both full backs have been consistantly good though.

Do me a favour, I can count 2 games in Jan where he was like a headless chicken.


Player of the month as poor a month as it was should surely go donw to work-rate.

I voted for Mark Noble, what's wrong with you lot. I've just read the Burnley match preview and realised that he's been in the first team for six years now and I still consider him a developing player, do I need to think again?

Tomkins has done well... but not great, so for him to be voted best last month says it all for me.
