Noble isn't a DM, or a CM, he's a WF....Wholefielder.

He's here, he's there, he's every-fucking-where, Mark Noble, Mark Noble!

pikey

players dont decide against joining a club based on one single game, the first of the season, whilst every other team is pretty much still in pre-season.

Performance may have been a one-off but, frankly, we can't afford those. No "marquee" player worth is salt is going to watch that and think: I must join this fantastic on-the-up club.

Pre-season and this have been pretty shit. Time is also a shop window for WHUFC as a club. Show what we're made of.

Folks on here saying the likes of Zaza "not good enough" for us. On this evidence, he'd never even consider joining! Bacca? Forget it.

Noble used to play DM under Allardyce and before. But last season and last night he played CM - Song, Kouyate and Obiang played the DM role under Bilic, Noble barely has.

Noble is a DM. I don't know how anyone could dispute that

You know I like a DM (not the boot) :-)

Not sure who it is. Sure we were several games behind them in fitness but its just my opinion. You shouldn't take me so seriously. No one else does :-)

Jesus fucking Christ Alf. How can you still be fucking going on about our midfield? How long has it been now, 5/6 years?

Have you ever thought that maybe you're wrong? Surely it's crossed your mind?

The reason we looked a bit slow and lethargic last night is because the players are still in pre season. Surely you know this? It's pretty obvious right?

I know you take a lot of stick Alex and I often disagree with your opinions (its what the site is for albeit without so many personal jibes would be nice :-) ).

Anyway, I think you are onto something here. Too many forward thinking midfielders. Who is the Kante of our team? I thought it might be Obiang but not sure he has the mobility to cover the turf. Noble is too slow for the role and IMO suited to the more creative, forward looking role. Is Nordvelt earmarked for the DM role? Maybe?

We left large areas of space behind our full backs and midfield last night. Part of the issue is forwards who cannot hold it up or suffer with poor distribution (both Valencia and Carroll last night for sure) but we just seemed to be far too "gung ho" and very vulnerable to the counter. It was evident at times last season too.

Good balanced wing backs who balance their forward runs with solid defending. For Antonio its not his instinct and their goals came from exposing the space behind him and admittedly his "bambi on ice" impression for the first.

So just putting a natural DM in the team will help but we also need to close space/players down better, have quality forwards to provide outlets and recognised full backs and CBs.

In summary, not going to worry too much just yet. Might change in 4 weeks time though if we do not expand squad quality and options :-)

The reason for getting several creative players isn't to play them all at once but to allow for injuries and some rotation given the number of games we could be playing. Totally agree that getting the balance right is important.
Can't just go all out attacking and ignore the fact we need to be able to defend too.

Re: ⚽ NK Domzale v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 2-1
A worrying aspect was that the three man central midfield got overrun at times and offered no cover to the full backs - I think that was a recurring problem last season too and only Nordtveit has come in to offer any alternative. I would have bought another midfielder this Summer.

I am very excited by Feghouli, he looks like a terrific signing, but like Crassus I am concerned about the balance when he plays with Payet. I think the problem with current personnel might be too many cooks in the creative roles, not enough runners. Although I don't favour it as a long-term option, I think the best solution is to play Kouyate further forward in his more roving midfield role.

''Feghouli is potentially very exciting when I think of him alongside with Lanzini and Payet.''

Fuck me I am a miserable bastard today but frankly I am not overly excited by that trident - that will be two of the three doing fuck all when not in possession then. The bonus of Antonio is that he applies the high press and supports his FB.

Play those three against any half decent opponent and they will over run the two CDM's and the non existent FB's will be without cover on both sides.

In fact the perfect opposition for us last year.

agreed crassus I wasn't that impressed with Byram tbh

Re: ⚽ NK Domzale v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 2-1
Lets have it staright on Byram, he looked useful moving forward. He looked bloody awful as a LB, nearly out of position as much as Antonio.

And when he played after signing he was equally questionable defensively and picking up a yellow card a game

Thats the reality, he is a promising young player who we are converting from his later right MF role in the fizz to his original RB berth in the big boys. Hope he makes it but currently as our only FB he is far from ready and on the left an understandable liability.

Exile, I agree on Byram. I thought the kid did well when he was thrown in to the Premier League last season, I'd like to see him get a chance.

Re: ⚽ NK Domzale v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 2-1
I said last night and I repeat, we also missed Bilic on the touchline. He gives so much guidance and instructions as the game unfolds. Antonio more than anyone benefits from this, though all the others do too. He'll tell Antonio when to go for it and when to hold back, and if he goes for it, Bilic makes sure someone comes over to cover him.

I'm willing to bet we would never show such a lack of cohesion when Slav is in his technical area.

That on top of a few stinky performances, and yes, a lack of respect for their left winger, which I bloody well hope doesn't happen next Thursday.

Oggy, Ginge, Cressy, Payet, Lanzini, Tore all missing last night

when we've signed a couple of full backs and strikers we'll be rocking

Re: ⚽ NK Domzale v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 2-1
Like a few others on here, I'm trying to find positives and have come up with these:

I thought Byram did reasonably well and hopefully has done enough to at least suggest that he could be first choice rb this season.

Antonio had an absolute shocker but if this has done something to make Slav reconsider his policy of playing him as rb, at least something positive will have come out of it.

Nordveidt was a bit unconvincing as a cb but showed that he has a good range of passing. Looking forward to seeing him as a dm and bringing the ball out of defense, launching attacks etc.

Feghouli looked terrific at times - very tricky on the ball, though some of his close passing was a bit suspect and he faded in the 2nd half, but I would mainly put that down to the lack of cohesion of the whole team. I have no doubt he will be a star this season.
