Andriy Yarmolenko and Marko Arnautovic scored the goals and dominated the headlines after Sunday’s 3-1 Premier League victory at Everton.
But without the performances of two unsung heroes in the centre of the West Ham United midfield, Manuel Pellegrini’s birthday may not have ended with the victory the manager had put top of his wish list.
Declan Rice had not appeared in the Premier League since being replaced at half-time in the opening-day defeat at Liverpool, while Pedro Obiang had played just 26 minutes of top-flight football as a substitute in the 1-0 home defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers a fortnight ago.
Despite their relative lack of recent match action, however, both players were imperious at Goodison Park.
Sitting deep in an anchor role in front of the back four, Rice showed maturity, composure and strength that belied his tender years, snuffing out repeated Everton attacks and regularly putting his team on the front foot with incisive, intelligent passes.
Only Felipe Anderson attempted more passes than the teenager’s 40, with 33 of those successfully reaching their target for an 82.5 per cent completion rate.
Defensively, Rice was outstanding, recovering possession more times (eleven) than any other player on either side, making a team-high five tackles, three clearances, an interception and blocking two Gylfi Sigurdsson attempts
Perhaps the only blot on the No41’s copybook was the yellow card he was shown for pulling back Blues substitute Oumar Niasse in the closing stages but, even then, the decision halted an attack that ultimately led to nothing when Sigurdsson’s free-kick thudded into the defensive wall.
After a difficult afternoon at Anfield, Rice returned with a peerless performance at the other end of Stanley Park.
It would be surprising if his name is not in the starting line-up when West Ham host his former club Chelsea at London Stadium next weekend.
The same can be said of Obiang, whose all-round qualities came to the fore at Goodison, where he led West Ham’s players in distance covered with 11.67km – with Rice next on 11.31km.
The Spaniard completed 29 of his 36 pass attempts for an 80.6 completion percentage, with one of those providing an inch-perfect assist for West Ham’s match-clinching third goal.
Indeed, Obiang was involved twice in the lead-up to Arnautovic’s strike, collecting an infield pass from Mark Noble and exchanging passes with the Austrian before confidently dribbling in to the Everton penalty area, drawing the home defence and creating space for the No7 to convert his low cross.
With captain Noble also back to his effervescent best, West Ham’s three-man midfield more than matched their adversaries, winning their individual battles with Idrissa Gana Gueye, Morgan Schneiderlin and Sigurdsson – the Icelander’s first-half header aside – to provide the platform for Pellegrini’s birthday victory.
Looking compact and in sync, the trio could be vital to West Ham's chances of building on their first three points of the season when they host the in-form Blues on Sunday.

Not for the first time, my doom and gloom prematch predictions were completely wrong and what welcome surprise.
The midfield 3 was the key to the improvements. We looked compact and Noble being pushed a little further forward is the best use of him now.
Rice was for me MOTM although I get why Arnie would get a lot of plaudits as he essentially was at the heart of most of the good forward play and 2 goals.
But Obiang too can take a bow as he was big part of 2 goals and looked far better in a midfield 3 and with support from Rice.
Its only one game of course but lets hope its the start of a formation and set up that is successful. Chelsea will be a different proposition and will be another big test.
I was doubtful about Rice as a DM simply because he has hardly played there but he bossed the game in there.
Must not get carried away but I did let some hope return to my thoughts despite it being something that has tormented me for 60 years following West Ham :-)

a huge result!
didnt see that coming tbh, even a 2-0 and 3-1 I've seen us royally fuck it up and lose points time and time again, especially with our current leaky defence but we managed the game til the end like actual pros!
still a bit worried how teams expose our defence from wide positions, but has to start the same team now against chelsea. everyone of them has earned it.

Wonderful performance. The midfield 3 were immense, delighted for Noble but Rice was absolutely top drawer.

Jamie Carragher, instead of spitting at little girls, should do some research. He was prattling on about the Sneiderlin sub just before half-time, totally unaware the guy's Dad had died during the week, which may have had something to do with it.
With some of the comments on here, you would have thought we had lost, not got an absolutely stonking victory at a place we always lose at!

I did say before the game Martin Atkinson is a cheat. and he tried his hardest to level the game up a few time, i did think he was going to give a very weak shout for a pen to them. I knew they would constantly foul and break up play, with out him booking one of them. They done it all game. Bloke just has BENT written all over him. In the same camp as the Wanker Dean!!!! More than happy with that result.

Excellent performance and result to match. Finally managed to get them to play instinctively, doing the right things more often.
Big positive was the midfield looked far more capable and organised which helped both the defence and front three. But the biggest positive is if we can play like that regularly then we’ll have a decent season rather than another relegation battle.
Looking forward to Chelsea now.

Brilliant performance, well done lads. There seemed so much more energy throughout the side and we pushed Everton back in all areas of the pitch.
Everybody had a good game, some had cracking games, but I'd like to single out Noble as an example of what we need (and what a lot of great sides have).
Noble is a classic 'get out' player. He supports, collects and gives the ball easy all day long. He allows other more talented players a get out when they may lose possession. This makes him look unadventurous and thats because he is, it's not his style.
Wilshire will never be able to do this. Obiang can, Rice can, but Noble does it best and its a vital skill we need every game.
Liverpool have it with Milner, Man U with Madic, Chelsea with Kante, Yids Dier etc etc.
Noble is not as good as these players but he's fucking good nonetheless and we are a poorer side without his energy and give and go skills.
So, now he's nearing the end of his career, this is the one vital position we need to fill and we need to do it sooner not later.
I wonder if MP see's Rice as this position and is feeding him into it gradually?
