Didn't see the whole game - just patches of it (was also writing an article, while keeping one eye on the game).

But the second goal from Haller - that's excatly the sort of goal he was NOT scoring last season. Picked the ball up in midfield, as he likes to drop deep, laid it off and then (the bit he was not doing last year) broke his back to get into the penalty area ahead of everybody else - and headed the second.

It was only one moment, but it was genuinely promising from Haller. I was on his case throughout last season, because I genuinely thought the was too lazy at times and didn't really push himself physically.

Good to see that second goal - even against Charlton. It was a proper centre forward's goal. Let's hope there's more of it from him this season.

didn't think Hull would beat Leeds well there you go..

Bowen was really disappointing against Newcastle. I cannot think of anything he did. But I wouldn’t drop him yet he was too good last season to drop after one poor performance. I would start Yarmolenko though. He is looking good this season. Just hope he can last a few games...

I'd start yarmo over Bowen.. but I know fuck all about anything.
Yarmo is the most intelligent baller we have..

I want Yarm and Haller to start Saturday, but with Antonio and Bowen shoe in's he's never going to start all 4.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Charlton - Official Match Thread
Yarmo is different class.
He has to start
Haller up top with Yarmo and Anderson .. Rice and Soucek.. LANZINI at 10
The defence is for another day..

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Charlton - Official Match Thread
Didn't Rice start with a couple of good performances and then have a shaky one?

Or something like that?

Once he got over the slightly dodgy patch (one match, dropped for one match, maybe?), he hasn't looked back.

Johnson was better than the last appearance but still a bit shaky at times and beaten too easily. Replaced late in second half. It's not unusual for young players to be a bit inconsistent but we need our full backs to be consistent and confident. Not sure he is ready to start loads of games but he is decent cover. Interestingly I thought he did well when he has played on the left.

How did Johnson play, given the mediocre quality of the opposition it should have been an opportunity to shine

Lots of level headed comments playing down the win.

Thats fine, but we’ve lost plenty like this one and it’s a good sign after Saturday.

Yes, good not to get carried away, but also good to have hope, be optimistic and increase confidence.

Good summary Sir Alf I agree with most of it.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Charlton - Official Match Thread 3-0FT
Cullen isn't going to be a PL starter IMO. Tidy squad player but even in the game last night he disappeared after half time for a while when Charlton actually created chances.

We are desperate for a strong centreback like Ginge was. Someone who will clear everything in the air, be strong in a tackle and throw themselves in the way. I like Ogbonna but he's getting on and is often having to cover Diop or Cresswell.

Diop is very poor in the air, constantly caught out with high balls and lacks concentration. Not sure why he has actually got worse than he was 2 seasons ago. The back 4 also can't play offside as the communication and leadership isn't there. The only defense I've seen worse than ours was Fulhams.
I'd be tempted to drop Diop for Rice in defence but then I'm not that impressed with Rice's aerial ability either.

Anderson was another disappointment for me. He should be making fun of teams like these but always seems reluctant to make something happen. He did get a boost from scoring and maybe his confidence is just shot to bits. Either way he has great first touch most of the time and should really use that to his advantage more. He should easily be a 10 goals a season player. Just not sure what is going on in his head - unsettled, unloved, unhappy, uncaring or just unsure of his role and crisis of confidence.

Frustrating that there is quality there but not the indication of a balance and understanding,

Pony.
You mean that hoof of a ball to Yarmolenko for our first goal ?
He was our only defensive midfielder, he couldn't wander into the Charlton box and muck about. Steady passing and control was what was required. He did that. Pass to the more attacking players. Yet he still set up several attacks. If he had some one like Coventry next to him he could of attacked more. Moyes was not brave enough to do this even for a half.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Charlton - Official Match Thread
Nice to win any game and 3-0 even better but Charlton were struggling to put a defence out in this game with several of their key defenders injured.

My opinion on what I saw ( just opinions ) :-)

Cresswell and Masuaku are, to coin a phrase, "not fit for purpose" at left back. Until that is addressed we will continue to ship goals from crosses that should have been cut out etc. Arsenal's Willian will tear Cresswell to pieces on Sat :-(

Diop is all over the place still and Balbuena looks like the 5 million pound player he is. Diop has age on his side but he needs to grow a backbone, concentrate and be far more physical. He looks and plays like a gangly beanpole. He will give away chances most games. Balbuena should never start. His distribution is shocking and he is too slow and lacks agility. Other than that he is great. :-)

Cullen does have excellent passing but like the rest of our midfield last night , he does not do enough off the ball in terms of closing down etc... He is so small too. But.... maybe worth a game or two to decide if he could perhaps step up a level? He seems to lack some of the self belief or arrogance you need. He was giving it to his "seniors" ( Anderson, Lanzini ) too quickly at times Maybe it is the usual thing that he needs time to establish/prove himself and then the team will be looking for him as opposed to Anderson and Lanzini who had a few bright moments late in the game but were careless in possession at times and not involved enough.

Snoddy is 33 and not getting any younger but worth a place in the squad simply due to his superb left foot. He is still getting back to fitness so was another who struggled to make much of an impact but you know he will give 100% and as full fitness returns is a player you can rely on to impact games even as a sub.

Haller? Poor man's Heskey. A thinner, less aggressive version. Nice touches, good eye for a pass but does not look like a natural goalscorer IMHO.

Yamalenko was the one player who always looked likely and did make things happen. He is all left foot and not the quickest ( like the whole squad) but is a useful player. Didnt someone say he has played as a central striker for past clubs and his country? Might be worth trying him there alongside Antonio or Haller. He would draw free kicks as he has an array of "tricks/skills" which defenders hate.

Anyway, the squad is unbalanced. No defensive minded midfielders until Coventry appeared late on. You get away with it against a league one team but we would have been overrun in midfield against better sides IMO. And like the first team on Saturday, we lack a real box-to-box player who is strong, physical, runs all day etc... Soucek is not that kind of athlete. A good defensive midfielder who can also get forward at times for set pieces and make late runs into the box but not the "box to box" type .

In summary , only Yamalenko made a strong case to be included on Saturday even though he may only last 60 mins. Cullen, might be worth starting with him or he replaces Noble but nothing yet to suggest he is going to be a big upgrade on old man Noble.

Surprised to see some saying Cullen was outstanding. I only saw the first half and would simply describe him as a neat and tidy player. Takes the easy pass too often, occasionally panics and hoofs. He must have improved considerably after the break.

Lee Trundle
Totally agree.
3-0 up after 80 minutes and he still takes 4 mins to make some subs. Then leaves Silva on the bench. All this talk of youngsters is crap from this useless liar.
Then he doesn't know if Wilshire will be here in the future
Wish Moyes would go instead
