And it seems only one of them is living rent free inside your head. Still, at least there's plenty of space in there for him

Quite often for us comma.

It constantly annoys me that last ditch blocks & clearances aside, our defenders constantly manage to find opposition players rather than teammates.

Watch Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea etc and they tend to find teammates or make clearances into an area they expect a teammate to be. Obviously worked on in training...

Be interesting to see a stat showing how many times a player set up an opponent’s attack by a misplaced pass or piece of inept play.

They are indeed very different players, for a start, Downes can pass the football to his teammates competently and consistently.

It's disingenuous to suggest that Soucek's only advantage over Downes is his height. There's also the little fact that Soucek averages almost 1 goal in 4 in club football, whereas Downes has 4 in 140

They are very different players

Some games you’ll want to play Downes - others Soucek.

Rest, rotate and refresh.

Re: ⚽ Anderlecht v West Ham - Official Match Thread - Preview
It is true that Soucek when he first came to tge club brought a work ethic, running and of course goals. Teams now aware of his goal threat so he had the inevitable second season drop off. He was also playing nonstop with tge WC between seasons and in every WH game and perhaps that led to the drop off in all areas of his game? That said, he picked up the work rate and running against Wolves and made some good interceptions and ball recoveries.

Downes getting rightly praised for his work rate and ability to cover, regain possession and hopefully he can do it in the faster tempo Premiership. If he can then he is a very useful alternative to both Soucek and Rice. But, and here IMHO is tge difference or. Emeritus he brings as opposed to Soucek. Speed/mobility as he is noticeably quicker over 5 yards to get a foot in etc. and passing / technique which appears and is statistically far superior to Soucek and comparable to Rice. You cannot train or teach that.

Soucek’s height is his advantage over Downes but that’s about it imo

I cannot understand how he hasn't started at least one game with Antonio, Scamacca & Bowen as the front three....

Spot on El Scorchio. As fans though we get favourites we like to see playing. I know I am disappointed when Rice doesn't start even if it's against Anderlecht. It makes me happy to see a really terrific, classy, player and he's WH.

I think Scamacca and Paqueta will become as influential as Rice and we'll want to see them every game too. I get disappointed now when I see Fornals and Benrahma on the team sheet...

If the second string can get ahead next thursday then I doubt the superstars would come on.

The 'best' 11 players cannot play every game. Especially in situations like this when we have a game about every 3-4 days for the next month.

Downes, Scamacca, Rice or any of them cannot and won't be asked to play them all. Likewise Antonio, Lanzini, Cresswell and others will have to start a fair few.

I'd have thought that was obvious, yet people still seem to expect that some players should start every single game and some should never start. That's the whole point of having a squad. Moyes job is to look at a group of games and work out which players he can use in which game to maximise results. In the case of last weekend, last night and Sunday it seems clear he wanted to rest a lot of starters yesterday, to much moaning before kick off from a lot of WHO, because he felt we could still get a result. Well, we won. and if we win on Sunday he'll have played his hand pretty damn well for these three games.

The line up will change game to game to keep players fresh and healthy and at best performance levels. Might as well get used to it rather than losing one's shit every time a player does or doesn't get selected for one game in isolation.

Very doubtful Downes starts Sunday. Very likely he starts next Thursday. Very likely Scamacca starts Sunday, very doubtful he starts next Thursday.

Do you travel then?

We have about 10,000 games in the next few weeks. We just need to win them all and then start doing song and dance routines with belly dances and fire eaters.

i thought we did enough. We will win the group and then let's see. It does annoy me though when Joe Cole keeps referring to the team as US!

Amazing as it sounds but being marginally better than them by one goal is all that's needed.

Thought Downes was decent again last night against another sub Premier league standard team. The thing he hasn't got going for him is that he's a zero going forward, not his job of course but to pair him with Rice as people are suggesting means pairing him with another player with minimal attacking threat. I dont think that's ideal. He has earnt a chance though, looked good, if not amazing. Thought we as a team were mainly shit last night, another bad side put out by Moyes and we were lucky to win despite being marginally better than them throughout. Changes little for me, expect Moyes to pick Soucek and Fabianski and Fornals as usual against Fulham. He's better start Scamacca though, the twat.

Don’t get that mallard, all what Downes is getting lauded for is how Soucek was at the start…..all everyone went on about is how much running the cunt did…..everyone has completely forgotten that Soucek came into a struggling West Ham team where we didn’t have a hope that some of the other players would up their game seeing him do a marathon every match.

I absolutely loved the way Downes was running around with a rocket up his arse hassling their players and breaking up play.

Would never see this effort from Souceck
