If these teams that Pele was playing against consisted of farmers and other dead-beats, why did South American teams of his time so regularly beat their European opponents in the World Club Championship?

As you guys below say it's a team game and all about partnerships. Brooking and Devonshire but also Brooking and Bonds in the centre. McAvennie and Cottee, Payet and Lanzini under Bilic. Messi benefitted from the brilliant Xavi and Iniesta. Re world class players I've always wondered how good Gazza could have been if he had gone to Man United under Ferguson rather than the London lights.

Everyone seems to pick the players that score the goals and up to a point I can understand that.
Yet what people don't see is the player that makes the goals and the defender that stops the strikers from scoring.
For me personally I could never look further than Bobby Moore as the best defender I've ever seen.
I'm lucky enough to have witnessed his whole career from '59 onwards and I've never seen a more classier defender.

Brooking was a standout player for us but his link up play with another standout player for us Devonshire was what I enjoyed most......that is football that is TEAM sport....pulling out individuals in the positions made for glory is detracting from what a great TEAM sport it is.

It's a TEAM game. Messi doesn't win the world Cup without emi martinez getting them through two shootouts. He might have been the best player in the Barcelona team, but Spain won the euros in 2008 and world cup in 2010 with puyol, pique, busquets, xavi and iniesta so it's pretty self evident that he needed them more than they needed him when they were the best team in the world.
Ditto, as you say, Pele. And the notion that Maradona was playing with a bunch of Carlos Kickaballs in 86 and at Napoli is equally ridiculous. Don't know why people can't just enjoy it for what it is.
I blame TWITTER
Which is why all this GOAT stuff is nonsense.

Those that say Pele clearly know nothing about football, very good player but was lucky to be part of an amazing Brazil TEAM, outside of that he just scored loads of goals against Brazilian farmers.

Sold - I do respect Jeff Powell and I'm too young to have seen much of Pele, but it's hard for me to get past the fact that he only ever played domestically in Brazil, and I've seen it quoted (not my words) that Brazil still would have won those world cups without Pele.
Now that Messi has won the world cup he has literally done everything, has won the lot and has pretty much all the goal records, and if you want to ignore that and just base it on pure ability alone then he's still the best I've seen on the ball. So for me the GOAT without any question.

Messi & Ronaldo are two of the all time legends and definitely the best of the modern era but this constant mention of the word “GOAT” feels a bit misplaced.
Imo you can’t compare those 2 to the likes of Maradona & Pele etc.
The game in the 60s/70s/80s is completely different to the modern era.
The pitches back then were far worse, the Balls were heavier, skilled players had hardly any protection and would get kicked all over the park, fitness coaches and diets to help and prolong careers were non existent back then.
Messi & Ronaldo played for clubs that were already hugely successful when they joined.
Maradona on the other hand (excuse the pun) joined Napoli at a time when they were a mid table club that had never won a league title or European trophy. Within 4 years he played a huge part in them winning 2 Serie A League titles, UEFA Cup & Coppa Italia in the toughest defensive league in the world.

He was only voted best player in La Liga six times in 17 seasons = he was not even the best player there for 65% of his career at Barca...
Can't use Ballon d'Or in his favour either - only applies to European leagues (as well as being fixed).

Where have I said he was carried... don't be so daft... he was part of the greatest club side that has probably been seen... I was stating if he was not there they would have probably still done more than OK... that's why I listed those players... it was stating it was just not the Messi show there ... even he has said that in the past

Sold you make it sound like Messi was at times carried in that Barca side. He was the standout player for years and years, countless unbelievable world class moments in huge games. They wouldn't of won half what they did without him.
The bloke scored 91 goals in a calendar year ffs... 91 !!!!!

I put them up as someone laughed on here re whether Barcelona would have won anything without the great Lionel... I put them up by stating they had great enough goal scorers there to win the majority of stuff... lets be honest most weeks they was whooping teams 5 or 6 nil... as I said I'm fucking glad Lionel has got that WC on his CV... for me it surpasses anything he has done at club level mainly as he was playing for probably the greatest club team there has ever been... from the QF onwards he showed the world he was a great player... yet there was probably better players in the final if we are being honest... as I said now he can be talked about in the same breath as Pele and Diego.... which is exactly what Jeff Powell has done when picking his 3... remember he has far far far more football over a greater period than probably any of us have done... so who am I to argue....
