Big Players in Big Games
|
What's your memories of a massive game where a star stepped up to the plate and delivered?
All this talk of Mbappe vs Messi when in reality both really only perform vs shit opposition.
Ronaldo was a big player on the big day for sure and I suppose I can recall Gerrard on 2 occasions (one won't be discussed ta very much) and the other was to drag Liverpool to a champs league win but in modern day football we rarely see a big player turn it on when most needed or do we..furnish me with big player big game moments......

George Parris was a big player but probably not in the way the thread starter meant.

MNF did an analysis of Bobby Moore's performance in the 1966 WC Final on the 25th anniversary of his death. 2 assists, 64 passes at 93% completion (all the highest for anyone on the pitch) and a touch map that showed he was EVERYWHERE over the pitch

I was at the camp nou for Barcelona 3 v valencia 2 and Rivaldo scored the greatest hattrick ever. It was my 30th that year my bruv got me a trip to that , 2 mates joined us we did the sonar festival as well. But that match was epic it was really Rivaldo v valencia who were a much better team ,it was a battle for 3rd place and the champs league with valencia needing just a draw. I can still see the over head kick to win in it , followed by the only pitch ever at camp nou. Outside was chaos we bumped into keown and he just said wtf have we just witnessed lads , never have I seen anything like that performance from a player. https://youtu.be/zD4Dfn708Ws

Watched us at home against Arsenal, went two nil up through Freddie Kanoute, got a penalty, Kanoute took it for his hatrick, duly missed. After that Thierry Henry gave an absolute masterclass in forward play and dragged Arsenal back into it, almost singlehandedly, he was magnificent that day.
Still wonder if Kanoute had scored we would most likely have won and pushed on instead of losing a relegation battle under Roeder. I think we went down with 42 points.

I thought of that too. He'd taken a yellow so knew he wouldn't play in the final and it didn't affect him at all, infact it seemed to spur him on even more.

Actually that reminds me when Roy Keane was absolutely brilliant away against Juventus in the Champions League. Think United were two down or something and he was outstanding in a come back.

The best I witness live was Roy Keane for Ireland against a star studded Dutch team. Ireland won 1-0 and thereby knocked the cock sure Dutch out of qualifying. Ireland were down to ten men when they took the lead. As some players began to drop deep to hold on, Keane kept getting on the ball and drove the whole team forward.

Feb 2013 we lost 3-2 at home to Spurs. They were driven to victory by a rampant Gareth Bale who never gave up with him adding to his opening goal to claim the winner with a classic long drive over Jussi into the net.
No wonder that RM paid a lot of money for him. Bale now a pale shadow of his former self.
