I don't know how people have the time to get upset about things like this. Would Beckham not taking the money suddenly change Qatar that conforms to western values that people deem to be the only possible way to live?

They take the knee because of a hysterical American cultural phenomenon propagated by social media that became widespread as a result of a general frustration people felt at being locked down for months that was triggered by George Floyd. does that make it any less ridiculous?

You have to make a list of what's wrong in football and Beckham is way down that list.....as long as there are football seasons and summer tournaments......people will not go near the issues at the top of the list....llets face it, football should be a hobby/pastime and not figure to highly in your real life priorities if it does you are addicted to the game and will let things go anyways.

Have mentioned before that Qatar owns masses of London property (30bn £ was the last figure I heard) plus major interests in UK companies. Am sure there is also lots of trade.
If they are prepared to give Beckham piles of money to help sportswash their image then in light of the rest there is no reason why he shouldnt tuck in just to go to some football matches and swan about at functions & promotional events.
The GAYS will still love him whatever he does.
Win win for Beckham as he also gets a holiday from his odd wife

OTB we've been 'washing' their money for decades along with many other questionable nations like Russia.....yet we choose to point out Beckham?

Re: Beckham…See You Next Tuesday,,,
What do Qatar get out of it, someone asked below. It's sportswashing - they've got one of the most famous footballers ever doing all sorts of promo videos saying "Ooh, isn't Qatar the greatest place ever?", distracting from what a fancy toilet in the desert that it really is - and from their human rights abuses.

Beckham is perfectly entitled to take that money - I certainly would - but he can't also maintain his position as gay icon and friend to the gays.

He wants to be everything to everyone, to take every Pound going - the pink Pound, the oil Pound - but he can't be all of those things. He can't be a pretend promoter of gay rights AND a pretend promoter of Qatar awesomeness. He doesn't give a fuck about either, FYI - it's just about money with him.

"They don't take the knee for George Floyd - do you genuinely somehow not know that, or are you willfully misunderstanding?"

Geord Floyd protest started the knee taking. It's absolutely to do with his death. I am presuming you were reading the news in 2020? The players even had Black Lives Matter written over their shirts.

The fact they got embarrassed by the BLM movement and subsequently tried to distance themselves is another story. But no George Floyd death no knee-taking. After prescribing a racist intent to those oppossed to the gesture they are overwhelmed by their fear of being seen to give succour to their "racist" opponents and have got themselves into this laughable situation where they kneel in front of standing black USA players.

What are they taking the knee for nowadays, OTB? It's hard to keep track.

Re: Beckham…See You Next Tuesday,,,
It's modern football and Beckham has been a big part of it evolving into what it is today....have digs a Thiefa and the like as this money train ain't stopping soon......you have to except it or make football less of a thing in your life to matter so much.....it's how the world works......football in a very fortunate way can work for both sides.....

There wouldn't have been rainbow laces or lecturing slogans on kits if the WC had been anywhere else though, so that point is nonsense.

Comma.

Just because YOU resented the timing (fair enough) dos'nt mean that it would have been a better gig had it been arranged to suitvyour preferences.

Re the knee comment. There was somethingvin my cheek as i typed, it was my tongue.

They've more money between them that you could spend in a lifetime. But I always think her life must be totally miserable, living on a leaf of lettuce a day.

It's mind boggling that an amoeba like Beckham can command that kind of fee for just sitting there (really don't think he done much more did he?). His management team are off the scale.

Re: Beckham…See You Next Tuesday,,,
I found the timing worked quite well. During the qualifiying period we had several 2 week international breaks which I always found frustrating. A lot better that this was one 6 week break and we got to enjoy the world cup rather than boring qualifiers.

Most of the players will get over 2 weeks rest before the season starts again. Rice didn't even make an appearance in friendly.
