RIP Gianluca - nice guy, great footballer and manager
Frank McGarvey just went the same way on Jan 1 - poncreatic cancer at 66. Bastard disease and goes completely under the radar cancer wise despite being comparatively common.

Saw that YouTube vid Manuel, I’d forgotten how good he was. And for the first half of it I couldn’t tell if he was left or right footed he’s so good with both. Only when the free kicks came, you see he uses his right. So well liked and down to earth yet if I remember rightly he come from a seriously wealthy family..

Marty, I remember Lazio, Parma & Fiorentina having great sides too....Crespo, Brolin, Rui Costa, Batisuta to name a few and then Juve had Zidane!
The Italian League was class for a loooooong time and it was great viewing.

Of all the 'stars' that have played and managed here in the last 30 years his star shine brighter than almost any other.
Always a pleasure to watch - yes, even for chelsea - and came across as a very genuine sincere man with no airs or graces, oozing class in everything he did.
Sad and far too early.

The sampdoria team of 90/91 was easily one of the best sides I've ever seen. Serie A was the best league in the world then by miles . Had gullit van basten rijkjaard maldini baresi at ac Milan . Inter had mattueus klinnsman brehme .Napoli had maradona juve had baggio and schilacci .but sampdoria pissed all over them that season. Rip Gianluca.

I worked as security in the tunnel at Upton Park in the late 90's, remember when we played Chelsea and saw PDC and a cigarette smoking Vialli stark bollock naked having a casual chat outside the dressing rooms

Actually gutted tbh. One of my favourite players of all time. Absolutely despise Chelsea but him and Zola were incredible to watch. Shame he never came our way (except to score). Seemed a top bloke as well.
RIP

You've named some top players there. I remember that Sampdoria side. Top drawer.

Very sad when someone goes earlier than they should and he certainly was a bloke who was full of life and from what we hear a pleasure to know. One of the earlier foreign players who added excitement to the game.
RIP
And finally keep doing those annual PSA tests lads. Anyone over 50 should be once every year or two and just ask for one if ur under 50.

Top bloke and top footballer, probably my favourite non WHU. I remember watching him when Italian football kicked off, he once scored a goal with a header that was literally on the ground!
My best mate had Pancreatic cancer, we raised over £50k to send him to Germany for a Whipple operation, then Covid hit so that was delayed for months but he went over, had the operation and didn't even need intensive care it was that successful but they found a lesion on his Kidney and that got him about a year ago.

I started following Italian football and Inter Milan in particular in 1990 but that Sampdoria team of the late 80s and early 90s with Vialli & Mancini up front and the likes of Pagliuca, Vierchowod, Lombardo & Mikhailchenko was fantastic.
Winning Serie A, European cup winners cup, 2 Italian cups & reaching a European cup final within a 4 year period for a club the size of Sampdoria was no mean feat and Vialli played a big part in that.
One of a few players to win all 3 European competition’s.
