How would this West Ham free 11 fair?
|
I posted this on the Josh Cullen thread but the conversion is deeper than Cullen.
With Luton, Sunderland and West Brom sitting good in 7th, 9th and 10th you have to wonder how many players not deemed good enough by West Ham will be playing in the premierleague if we get relegated.
And then how much money we have spent in all that time to end up where we are winning the grand sum of nothing:
We can make a free 11?
GK - Adrian RB - Ashby LB - D Potts CB - Burke CB - Tomkins RW - Fredericks CM - Josh Cullen CM - Ekwah LW - Stanislas FW - Diangana ST - Perkins
There must be a good bench too if go to the championship current top 10 and spend a little cash:
Byram Mpanzu G Baldock Ngakia Alese Diop Kouyaté
You have to put in Johnson, Rice, Coventry and Noble over the last 10yrs.
The question is, how much money have we spent on the last 10yrs to get to the bottom of the PL?
Are we seeing the phenomenon of regression to the mean? Could we have done nothing and still got to the same place?

I think the question is not whether we've let any gems go, it's why we haven't produced any gems

Mate, all of those you mention had several loan spells at lower level clubs where they didn't pull up any trees. All of them eventually dragged themselves up to Championship level and fair play to them for that.
I still think it was best for them and the club to allow them to do that elsewhere. None of them have done enough to have proved the club to have been wrong to let them go.
By the way, in my opinion, it's not the club's job to give academy players endless time and fancy money to maybe make it into the first team. The club is not a charity. It's up to the players to force their way into the first team. And it's up to them to prove the club was wrong to release them, not the other way round.

"Burke - I genuinely can't remember who this is"
Scored the winning goal on a decently cold and windy night at the OS. It was in extra time vs. Shrewsbury in the Cup a few years back. Wasn't sure we were going make the last train back to Oxford, is partially why I remember it.
Made a handleful of starts in the league that year as well, I beleve

cholo I agree with you to an extent
In the absence of a proper a transfer strategy, make do and mend / bootstrapping by coaching your players properly could develop better results than wasting hundreds of millions to keep the football machine moving.
More kids get chances and develop and suddenly even better kids want to join and it snowballs.

You could argue youth players should be given more of a chance to step, it's not something I'd disagree with in principle, but I think comparing them to failed big money transfers is a bit of a straw man. In the last 10 years we must've rejected 100s of youngsters, very few of them even went on to have a career at lower level, a tiny fraction made it to the Premier league.
We should just be signing more suitable players and have a better transfer strategy. Concentrating on that would yield better result imho.

Surface
How good would say Potts have become if he had had as many games as Masuaku or an Emerson to prove himself and learn his trade at West Ham?
How good would say Stanislas have become if he had as many games as Anderson and others to prove himself and learn his trade at West Ham?
How good would Cullen have become if he had as many games as Soucek, Downes etc to prove himself and learn his trade at West Ham?
Those three have all suffered major setback and shown the character to build impressive championships / premierships careers
In the meantime we have splashed endless amounts of cash to excite fans and see ourselves bottom of the table.

Much better we spend £12m on similar players instead, and hope they turn out good enough.

The issue with many of them isn't that they left and were instantly good enough, many went away and played for years before they got there. They're not necessarily automatically ready-made Championship players.

There's a possibility we'll get relegated this year. That lot would get relegated with about 6 points.
Adrian - OK Ashby - Hardly ever played - nobody has any reason to believe he is any good Potts - Had quite a few chances. Didn't make it. West Ham froonfro. Love the boy. Burke - I genuinely can't remember who this is Tomkins - Promising start. Never established himself as first-choice PL starter here or at Palace. Doesn't really feature any more for Palace at all. Fredericks - half decent WB who was slaughtered on here. Josh - at 26 has never played in PL. West Ham froonfru. Love the kid Ekwah - No idea if he's any good. Neither has anyone else Stanislas - Hasn't played this season. Finished Diangana - Championship squad player Perkins - No idea if he's any good. Neither has anyone else
It's a great game, though, mate. I'd play again!!!!!!!
