How about getting rid of the moniker "Land of the Free" - as it is anything but.
Most American citizens I've met have an air of entitlement about them; a majority of those see that as an entitlement to work and earn the wealth that will not only raise their status, but that of their descendants, too. The others see that entitlement as a green light to just take what you want and fuck everybody else (whilst blaming them in the process, obviously).
I would only say that the long term solution is educating the Americans that the world has moved on from the days of the "Wild, wild west" and they are invited to join us. Get rid of all this "It's MY ball and if I can't play centre forward and score the winning goal, then I'm going home and taking the ball with me" bollocks.
But what cunt of a politician is going to invest in a program that takes at least 20 years to work through their society when they are only elected for 4 of those? Fuck someone else getting the credit.
Inn any case, having a better educated population runs the chance of a significant enough majority waking up from the "American Dream" - and then we'll see the sparks fly.

Let’s not pretend calls for teachers to be armed is somehow on the extremes of the modern Republican Party, it’s pretty centrist these days.
