How do you pronounce the words 'Salt' and 'Fault'?

Having moved to sunny Chelmsford a year back from Hornchurch, I've noticed the locals up here pronounce these words like 'Bolt' (bowl with a T on the end), whereas with people from Hornchurch and all of London, say them like 'Halt' (hall with a T on the end)
Weird considering they're only 15 miles away from each other.

While we're on the subject though, it is to the great amusement of Lady B - a Geordie by birth and upbringing - that when I'm in a restaraunt or some shops in London she has to speak to people as they can't understand me! Apparently, to eastern europeans and most other races I speak too fast for them to understand. Had the same trouble when I was in California and Florida. Or perhaps I just don't talk pwoper...

Perhaps of more interest Eddie is why - having moved to equally sunny Colchester a few years back - most locals sound to me like they were all hiding in the back of my removal van! There's a few 'Sawlters' and Fauwlters' but most of Essex have adopted that east end with an Aussie tinge accent... so a statement sounds like a question?...and it seems pretty general now that a bunch of knobheads in something like TOWIE sound like a cross between something from The Sweeney circa 1976 and Neighbours circa 1988.

On paper col, it does look like it shouldnt be a problem, but for some reason, after a beer, i cant say 'no onions' it just comes out as one long word.... Even saying it now, and granted, i have had a beer, its hard.....
