Player ratings - Season 2011/12
|
|
So it's all over and our goal was achieved the long way round and this season we've used an amazing 36 players and here's how they stack up for me....
James Tomkins 9 - A superb season from the centre back who had a spell in midfield. Really got better as the season went on and is going to take the PL by storm
Mark Noble 9 - When Noble played well, West Ham played well, an ever present when fully fit in the league, Noble was at the heart of everything good this season.
Ricardo Vaz Te 9 - I'm struggling to think of when half a million has been better spent at West Ham, he come in, added something different and scored goals.
Robert Green 8 - Will be a massive loss if he leaves and difficult to replace this cult hero. A really solid season where he won plenty of points with some excellent saves and has won a well deserved call up to the euros.
Winston Reid 8 - By far the most improved player, Winston formed a superb partnership with James Tomkins at the back and added a few goals including that one against Millwall.
George McCartney 7 - Not difficult to see why he was the players player of the season, a solid defender who rarely let us down, deserves a years contract.
Kevin Nolan 7 - Split plenty of fans did our Kevin and took a while to settle but brought goals and leadership a plenty and as the season closed was really hitting top form.
Carlton Cole 7 - An enigma of a player who we saw both sides from again this season. Top scorer again and at times unplayable but did have a dip in form again.
Gary O'Neil 7 - Took his time to recover from a career threatening injury to return to top form in the centre of the park just when we needed him and he turned in a string of fine displays.
Sam Baldock 6 - Some might say 6 is a tad high but he came in and showed he could play, never got much of chance when fluffing his lines after injury but there's a natural goalscorer there even if there has to be a doubt over his ability at the top level.
Nicky Maynard 6 - A great signing for the price and had to play a bit part but played the bit part rather well at times, 3 goals in 9 starts a decent return and will get chances next season.
Jack Collison 6 - In and out of the side and in and out of form but found some when it mattered and showed he shouldn't be written off.
Manny Almunia 6 - Drafted in on loan to cover the injured Green and done rather well.
Matty Taylor 6 - Another in and out of form and the team, mostly down to injury, has a brilliant left foot and set up plenty of goals but can go missing.
Abdoulaye Faye 6 - A good start to his West Ham career but exposed late in the season by the better sides and ended up playing 2nd fiddle to Reid.
Joey O'Brien 6 - Not sure we was signed as a right back but spent plenty of the season as the first choice in that position and done well enough. Another with PL experience that will get games next season.
Julian Faubert 6 - In typical Julian style his form was hit and miss but he offered plenty of the course of the season, I wish him luck in the future.
Papa Diop 6 - Played well in the holding role when fit and then couldn't win his place back, I think he might get another year but the club will be seeking a better option.
Robert Hall 6 - We didn't see too much of the lad but what we did see in the few cameos was exciting and he looks to have a big future.
Scott Parker 5 - Lots of shit thrown at him but as much as he wanted away I don't buy into him not trying. His 2nd half performance at Watford was a delightful way to say goodbye.
Guy Demel 5 - Only got fit for the last knocking and despite a poor performance in the final there was plenty to like about Guy and look forward to him getting fit pre-seaon and nailing down the right back spot.
Henri Lansbury 5 - Arrived in a bit of a fanfare and had a good debut, scoring a goal but struggled a bit after that, only showing small glimps of ability as he fell down the pecking order.
Fred Piquionne 5 - Got lots of shit thrown at him for some real poor perfomances but it wasn't all bad including a match winning performance at the Riverside.
Danny Potts 5 - Answered the call and had a superb debut, struggled a bit after but looks to have a good chance of being a player.
Frank Nouble 4 - Looks just to have come up short at this level but did excite and score a goal from his limited chances.
Danny Collins 4 - Looked a BFS favorite for a fleeting moment, looked a player at times and awful at others.
John Carew 3 - Not the worst start to his West Ham career but quickly fell away and offered almost nothing.
David Bentley 3 - Injury ruined his chances but looked like a player we could well have done with. Should have won hero status with us at the Den and that was a bad miss.
Freddie Sears 2 - Just doesn't look like he's a Championship standard player, shipped out on loan to a level more his standard.
Henrita Ilunga 2 - Was given a chance and wasn't up to much, shipped out and then paid off.
Paublo Barrera 1 - Didn't want to be here and showed nothing in the league cup game and one game as sub in the league and soon was leaving on a jet plane.
Ravel Morrison 1 - Despite BFS saying he was the future, the fans were calling for him and when he finally got on the pitch kicked it out for a throw and that was that. Being a betting man I just have a feeling this time next year he'll be alot closer to the top.
Junior Stanislas 1 - Didn't get much time on the pitch before BFS showed him the door.
Brain Montengro 1 - Just the one chance for a few minutes in the cup and didn't do anything of note.
Ruud Boffin 1 - Just not up to the job at this level. 2 games, 2 cup exits.
Callum McNaughton 1 - Got his chance and put in a fair 45 minutes before making a rash challenge to see red and the end of his West Ham career.
What say you?

You are right. But that should't overshadow the fact that in many of the games he played in he was our MOM. He was colossal for most of the season.
You say those games and his performances cost us automatic promotion. I say that some of his other performances gave us a chance of automatic promotion.

It's weird the way everyone suddenly seems to be talking about O'Brien as if he's not good enough any more. He's been consistently excellent this season in a positions that probably isn't his preferred one.
You don't have to be as good as Dani Alves to be a good PL right back. Just look at Tony Hibbert.

Faye for me got marked down at least a point for his performances at home to Reading and Birmingham where he was simply shocking and exposed by better players than he faced most of the time and those games cost us automatic promotion in my eyes.

I'd be interested to read Vinny's player summaries for, say, Faye from each match back to back. Would give a good insight into his performance over the season...
...can't be bothered meself though.

Can't disagree with any of those ratings and summaries, KIA.
Not that it matters, considering how many others we have who qualify, but I think in your first team squad list for next year Vaz Te must also qualify as a home grown player. He was at Bolton for 3-4 years before he was 21.

Anthony ANNAN for holding midfield for me.

Other than that, I make the order pretty much spot on from the games I saw.

Don't agree with Piquionne getting a 5. He deserves a 1 or a 2 tops. He was absolute shit and scored the same woeful amount as Carew.
£40k a week for 2 goals in 18 months?

Yeah he was involved in so few games Parker it was difficult to mark him better than a 5.

To continue the lovefest, that was a good read and wdo' disagree very much. My diffs with you are:-
Demel - I feel this guy is a disaster waiting [?] to happen, is he suited to zonal marking than man marking, anyway, he's not for me;
Taylor - I like Taylor as a left midfielder but as a LB he is something of a liability;
Faubert - all effort and eccentrically one dimensional [oxymoron?] poor midfielder, and a very poor RB;
Nolan - faint praise, damn! I thought he was pretty superb over the last 20 games. And Saturday he was my MOTM. Peculiar sort of player, or is it the tactics he and Sam employ. Sometimes he is the furthest forward playing alongside Cole at others he sits very deep. This, I suppose, can only be tactics.
Green - another superb season for us, well done.

Bloody hell - I wanted to read that and dig KIA for some stupid opinion but I make it pretty much Spot on.
I'd be tempted to put Vaz Te to an 8 as when he played in midfield he wasn't great, but then I look at his goal return to games and cost and I think you have it right.
Parker i'd put higher as I think he played better than a 5 - I just assume it was due to the amount of games he played he was marked down?
Thanks KIA

Josh - one of the things I've been most critical of g&s for (although it was mostly Karren, son, and I totally understand the reasoning) is the cutting back of our scouting network. I just don't know that we will be unearthing any Tiote's any time soon. I'd imagine it'll be someone well known, possibly from a relegated club. An nzonzi (although he's not played exclusively in that role), that fouling cunt from wolves, someone like that. If it wasn't for the obvious, I'd have bet a lot of money on us being in for muamba.

For some reason big sam did go off Baldock after x mas! Loan move would do the lad some good I think and hopefully come back stronger in the 2nd part of the season .
Don't think Faye and diop will be with us next season.
I like Noble in the holding role! Breaks up play well and his short and long passing is very good. We no he's not the fasted player in the world so this could be the role for him.

Liverpool signed Konchesky and Downing so that means nothing.

Yep, I think that will be our stock set up next season, which makes the holding midfielder and a wide man, along with the full backs, the priority. Don't know why, just a feeling they'll let him go.
Said when it looked like they'd go down that I'd like Diame from Wigan, but their results improved without him, and he was linked with Liverpool the other day. Weird.
