A brief list of REALISTIC transfer targets - Our budget is going to be £20 odd million
|

1 - Nathaniel Clyne (Palace) Right Back 2 - Scott Dann (Blackburn) Centre Back 3 - Roger Johnson (Wolves) Centre Back 4 - Andy Taylor (Cardiff) Left Back 5 - Ben Turner (Cardiff) Centre Back 6 - Peter Whittingham (Cardiff) Left Midfield/Forward 7 - Matt Phillips (Blackpool) Right Midfield 8 - Kieran Richardson (Sunderland) Left Midfield/Forward 9 - Jordan Rhodes (Huddersfield) 10 - Willfred Zaha (Palace)
I know 2 & 3 had shocking seasons at Blackburn & Wolves but at Birmingham they seemed to bring the best out of each other...and our manager BFS & Wally Downes are renowed defensive coaches.
Tomkins is still 1st choice though!

We can't have it all ways. If a wave of good, but unproven workers came in for any other profession, we would be up in arms, shouting for them to be sent back to where they came from! Also, there are equivalent British players not being given the chance due to cheap imports. We have to give our own a chance.

Will Buckley fro Brighton is worth a punt. Would only cost about 3 mil. Need someone who can score goals at prem level as well. How much would berbatov cost?

So looks like we'll gamble with our premiership place by trying to do things on the cheap in the summer and then be forced to panic buy in January when we're flirting with relegation.

When we hired Allardyc it was likely because:
1. He is good at getting teams out of the championship with disciplined tactical football
2. He is good at keeping weak teams in the prem
3. He is good at getting the best out of mediocre players and making a few shrew but usually cheap signings.
I wouldnt expect we were ever planning on spending much after promotion but to play the best percentages on a limited budget whileminimalizing risk by a demotion or need to yo-yo

Oh I see. So we get to miss out on the potential bargains and have to pay grossly inflated fees if and when they become established internationals.

Different rules...
That's why many African & Non EU players go to Spain...Holland ...Germany...Belgium ...France...
Play there for a few years and then can get approved to move to England...

Tex
Do they not have the same rules in France, Germany, Spain etc. or are they able to apply the rules more selectively?

Monk...
Work permits...
Only well established International level players will get work permits...
Unless they have EU passports...

Regarding the unknown African. What is interesting is that most African players arrive in the Premiership via Continental European (French/ German) sides. I wonder why this is? Because English teams are not prepared to take the risk or down to work permit problems before they are established?

If the total is 20 million and covers wages etc... then we will be looking at a mix of Championship players, Bosmans and loans.
I think most of us are realistic enough to know they we will not be getting players we any material transfer fee. Perhaps one at most and highest fee would be around 4 or million IMO.
A good Bosman would be high wages although the trade off is that they will probably be ageing.
I think a few smart purchases from the Championship is where most of our business will be.
I suppose the only "wild card" might be some unknown African but those days are probably over? Its a global market nowadays and the scouting network cover just about every inch of it.
I would be happy with Snoddy from Leeds, someone like Saha from Palace and Nzonzi from Blackburn for starters. Another striker will be where we might have to dish out the 5 or so million?
Of course, I could be completely wrong. It wouldnt be the first time (coughs) :)

I really think the purchase of a decent playmaker is imperative in this league to break those defences down with some slick incisive passing....we will struggle to score goals without one!!

I like Dann and Johnson for CB vacancies and I would like a Prem proven scorer. Anelka would be brilliant for us

I'm with boltkunt on this and I trust Allardyce's judgement. He knew what was needed to get us up and he knows what it will take to keep us, as he did with Bolton and Blackburn. He will sign some players that will work out and like any other manger some that dont. He will be judged at the end of next season based on where we finish, its as simple as that.

Aye, spot on
I reckon Cole and Vaz Te can do well given the service but we really need strength in depth in defence which is where we always fuck up...playing square pegs in round holes often with no decent cover in the centre and full back positions...
