Youth football changes
Can't see a thread on this, so here goes.

The changes mooted and seemingly overwhelmingly approved at grass roots level for the kids might well prove to be the most important change for English football in my lifetime.

For those who aren't up with it the changes will mean that under 8's are limited to 5 v 5 games while under 12's will be limited to 9 v 9 with intermediate ages playing 7 v 7. And games are to be played on smaller pitches with smaller goals. Effective 14/15.

Re: Youth football changes
For the record I have a coaching badge or two but football in general is boring the shit out of me these days. I coach at a Division One amateur level in Aberdeenshire and we've just won promotion to play in the Premier League for the first time ever.

Re: Youth football changes
conceptually it's much more easy for younger kids to understand when the numbers are smaller. Even my u13 boys have a difficult time with shape and spacing at 11 v 11. Of course, for all that's worth so did my amateur league team, but that's b/c most came through the shit system that is the NCAA in the US.

Pity we can't get characters back into the game, individuality also seems to be lost in favour of the team ethic these days.

Re: Youth football changes
some comments on here about 5 a side teams and then only having a squad of 7. why not get a squad of 12 and then have two teams. your matches will be pretty short so play them one after the other on the same morning.

My U8 team recently played in two tournaments at MAy and Baker ground. we used the same size pitch one tourny was 7 a side the other 5 a side. the difference was there for all to see. more time on the ball and more touches in the 5 a side.

Re: Youth football changes
I will be coaching an u7s team next season and we won't be playing in a league !

They will train, play, and I looking to set up a few small tournaments( play 3 or 4 15 min games )
The best thing about not being in a league is u can make up the rules ie

Goal keeper can only roll the ball out.
Kick inns or thrown ins
Mark the pitch into a grip to help kids find spare
Play 5v5 '5v6 6v6 what ever works for your kids.

I'm not saying i no it all or that i am right. Just want I think could help players improve.

There loads of things u can do that u would't be able to do in a league. Plus it takes the pressure of them

less players = more touches. 4aside, 5aside all the way for me.

Cost wise it wouldn't be a prob for my situation. I charge my U9s £2 every training session and we have shit loads in the pot. No sponsor either.

Re: Youth football changes
They do paul but its up to you to take out the bits that will help your player what ever age they are.

I agree just because u may have done loads of course don't mean u are a good Cocah !

I meet coaches a lot who tell me they're done this and that courses ! Then 15 min into a game there shouting" get it out , move , pass etc ( u no what I mean)

I have done Youth module 1 and 2 - totally different styles of coaching compared to the old level 1 and level 2.

They totally contradict themselves.

Re: Youth football changes
I run two sides U10 and U13 next season. One team is mixed ability and the other plays a standard above grassroots but below centre of excellence.

These changes are great in that they'll create more footballing based teams but unless grassroots clubs get financial support and additional facilities I could see some struggle and if they struggle that could see some kids out of football.

I know the Selkent league (south east london and kent league) are opposed to some of the changes for this reason. There has even been talk of leagues going unaffiliated.

Regarding pricing, if I charged 2.50 a week I would have to subsidise the account more than what I do already. With two teams it would be impossible.

I charge for one team £65 signing on and £17 per month and the other is £65 signing on fee and £30 per month. The latter get hot food after every game and training twice a week on 3g.

Re: Youth football changes
We need to show kids how to play football befor we start putting the kids into league games!

I would remove all leagues until under 12s ! They still play friendly ect.

There to my much pressure put on them at a young age! Which stops them trying to skill ie drilling ,turning

Is there any cocahes on here who have done the 1st and 2nd youth module ?

These are very good and will help any cocahes working with kids

Wish when I was younger I was coached to try and play proper football instead of just hoofing the ball up there. I was a defender

completey agree. at that age they should all get get playing time

the problem is finding teams that agree with this idea, and parents that wont moan one way or another

my eldest goes up to 9-a-side in september also

good idea

i was worried 11 v 11 at that age would produce ruby scores (due to the size of the goals they used), but the truth is the pitches were so big for them they were knackered and played most in the middle third of the pitch

smaller pitches with less players is much better

they have had a couple of training sessions since the season ended. although every kid completely understands off side (as much as you can now-a-days anyway) watching them implement it was quite amusing

Bald Git

When we were playing 7v7 we had a squad of 9 boys as you can’t have 5 boys sitting on the sidelines.

in my opinion if you have that many boys I feel that they should all get the same amount of playing time which means you have to make 5 subs during the game

This will frustrate the parents of the better players as they believe that their boys are amazing and they will leave to go to (what they believe to be) better clubs (with big reputations)

Personally if they do away with games at under 7s & under 8s level then this would kill parents expectations and give us coaches a good 2 years to develop the core skills of the game.

About time! Interestingly, well for me, I only used small sided games for the whole of last seasons training schedule and by the New Year we were playing teams off the park that had previously out muscled us..it was like watching Barcelona!

Re: Youth football changes
Al,

You'll need a squad of 12 for 7 v 7 and 14 for 9 v 9 so you'll need to increase fees accordingly compared to a squad of 16 for 11 v 11.

The players should get more playing time so they should be happy.

In my club we ran three teams of 12 instead of two of 16 when we introduced these changes in the US a few years ago.

If you are playing 5v5 you would have no more than 7 boys in your squad

Personally they should do away with any level of competitive football until the boys are at least 9

If I was to start again at under 7s I would purely concentrate on ball manipulation and encouraging positive play

Scoring goals or playing games would not even enter my mind till they were 9

Problem is parents want to see their children playing and winning games

Leaving aside any possible mercenary comments if it's 7 v 7 that's 14 boys.

Re: Youth football changes
This is all good and well but having a squad of only 7 players for ages 7 & 8 will not produce enough money to cover the cost of kit, training facilities, pitches & equipment

Even though I do agree with this ruling once again the FA have not thought about cost

I use to charge my boys £2.50 a session for training and £35 a season to play; luckily I also had a few mates willing to sponsor us.

If you are only charging 7 boys £2.50 a session this will no way cover the overhead costs unless you can produce money elsewhere

Charging anymore than £2.50 would be scandalous and will price many kids out of grassroots football.
