Re: Astro turf could be on the way back
The pitch at the Boleyn has a mixture of grass and articial grass. That's why it still looks good in the middle of winter. It is a mat of 'astro turf' that has grass seed sewn into it.

Re: Astro turf could be on the way back
Nice to not have games postponed because of frozen pitches etc but I like the variety of conditions that grass pitches throw up throughout the year, much like why I like proper referees making all decisions, keeps the game interesting and sometimes controversal.

If every pitch was perfect and every refereeing decision 100% correct then I reckon football would lose a lot of the reasons why we like it.

As mentioned earlier, astro is usually tough on players with back, knee and ankle issues. I've had players who cant train on it on a Thursday night as it breaks them for the games on a Saturday.

I like 3g astro.

The new style astros are nice. It's not as if every team is gonna get one so have no problem. If it's good enough for Champions League it should be good enough for Accrington Stanley.

Makes financial sense in the lower leagues. Decent pitch, low maintenance and available to the community 7 days a week. Win-Win.

Astro turf = Oldham = 6-0 hammering = my worst away game ever.

Re: Astro turf could be on the way back
Presumably, this will be real grass mixed with synthetic grass?

The new indoor Forsyth Barr stadium in Dunedin has the same sort of set-up.

I can't imagine them allowing a fully synthetic one?

So how does this tie in with the need to reduce the country's carbon footprint? Not only will it take energy to manufacture and install, it will remove from the environment one half acre of carbon-dioxide eating, oxygen producing plant life for every installation.

Some serious brown-enveloping going on here, I suspect.

I've played on astroturf, old-style for years.

I haven't had burns for ages, this thread appears and now I've got three nasty ones in a single match.

I blame Andy.

Hope not, still have nightmare's about our trips to Luton & Oldham when they had astro pitches.

I can't remember us ever winning at Luton on that pitch, we had some awful displays there, yet we won a few times on QPR's astro.

Re: Astro turf could be on the way back
i remember being in the upper tier of the loft at qpr one year and from a drop kick the ball bounced level with me about 25 ft !

Dowie was out for a while after getting 'burnt' I seem t to recall after we played Luton in the cup. Think that was on a beam back to Upton Park.

The new fieldturf technology is NOTHING like fucking astro turf!

Re: Astro turf could be on the way back
I remember watching QPR playing on it on the telly and it seemed like slow motion when everyone stopped and put their hands on their hips waiting for the ball to descend after the bounce.

Re: Astro turf could be on the way back
I remember Luton's pitch wasn't too bad....Loftus road was a nightmare though. They had to add sand to deaden the bounce.

It did encourage playing the ball tl the feet which was the West ham style then...let the ball do the work and not lump it into space.

From the www.fieldturf.com site:-

About FieldTurf Artificial Turf

FieldTurf was developed and engineered for athletes, by athletes. Before we came along, artificial turf was something to be avoided. The very phrase conjured up images of carpet and concrete, non-contact injuries, and careers ended prematurely. Natural grass was considered the only solution – even though it required constant maintenance and care. This was the environment in which we asked ourselves one question:
β€œCan we make synthetic turf that is equal to or better than the best natural grass?”
In seeking the answer to this question, we worked closely with athletes, former players, coaches, trainers, and doctors. Development included years of trials, tests, samples, equipment innovations and advanced formulas – all with the goal of developing an artificial turf system that combined the performance properties of natural grass with the benefits of a synthetic solution. It worked.

Re: Astro turf could be on the way back
It will greatly shorten the life of footballers' careers, and it changes the way the ball rolls and bounces on the pitch.

You'll notice there is not a single golf course in the world that uses these surfaces

You are right Bushey , I love the footbal played on them . They are massivley unforgiving on ankles and knees though , this is not hepled by 30 years of constantly playing and showing signs of falling apart anyway.

Re: Astro turf could be on the way back
Nothing wrong with the 3G surfaces... In fact i love playing on them.

Still, you will never beat a decent grass surface.

well that's a 6-0 away defeat in the cup waiting for us if this goes through!

Re: Astro turf could be on the way back
Old type terrible burns , new type joint damage . Im now virtually disabled playing on the new type , only played on them for fun as I love playing on astro turf , more ball and greater technical ability wins the day . My knee has now had three ops and still dislocates (painful as fuck). I would rather the horrendous burns although sleeping was painful mind when the sheets stuck to the weeping knee or thigh.

No doubt the owners of Luton & Oldham will be erect at the prospect.
