The problem with this type of programme is that it hints of a golden age for the area whereas it was overcrowded and poor. Sure the High Street residents were comparatively well off but as they owned the shops they lived above it stood to reason.
Fact is the councils had a huge housing problem and they took the route that most other councils were taking. Then, years later, along comes a documentary maker with 20/20 hindsite points his camera at people undynamic enough to have stayed put and the blame game ensues.

Great programme.
I can't help feeling that councils are still doing it with their "affordable housing" bollocks.
I thought they had learnt their lessons about high rise housing that was built in the 60s when it all turned into ghettos and slums in the 80s/90s.
BUT the idiots are allowing high rise appartments again. They may sound up market and posh but they will inevitably be the ghettos of the future.
Trouble is you can never find out who is responsible for this crap or get at them, just as this programme highlighted.

Great programme.
Was shocked at how the council had fucking ruined a once nice area, with generations of families plying the same trade only to have that taken away from them.
Sad times and all too indicative of some of the shithole areas around London.

A very honest program, dealt with issues that we've all known have been going on but have been swept under the carpet for years.

Well, I was, ahem, "passing" the other day and happened to notice the order of closure notice on the door, not sure how long it's been gone, but it was a sad sight for sure. Some fun nights had been had in there.

, 9:41 Thu Jun 7 This was very true. Many old terraced areas became immigrant areas because as one family moved in the old population moved out to the white suburbs. Strangely enough many of those areas have now gone up in the world BECAUSE of the type of housing that was left and how desirable it became. Having said that even old council flats in nice old brick buildings became valuable over time.
wonder when the shit high rises will become desirable? Well, when they get rid of the underclass and do them up. Some of these flats have amazing views in amazing locations. Your area is as good as you make it.

Deptford High St is around the corner from me.. I don't often feel uncomfortable in the Lewisham area, though it's largely a shithole, but tht street can be unnerving in the evening. Loads of shit hanging round.

One of the episodes will be on Arnold Circus, just off Shoreditch High Street.
Will be interesting to see the transformation over the last 15 years from run-down no-go zone, to hip and trendy student-ville.
I wonder if they will feature the closing down of The Olde Axe?

I saw this programme and found it interesting but I think I see things differently to how the makers intended.
If you consider a similar area, which did not get demolished, you will see that over time all those that were younger and able to got out of the area and in to better housing elsewhere.
Then the older residents slowly die off and british commonwealth immigrants move in and slowly take up the outdated housing stock because the original ethnic population is happy living in a different area.

fascinating stuff and very well put together- decent facts, great original footage and good range of characters.
the majority of those that left and are now in the likes of bexleyheath and further beyond are pretty happy they are out of it, i rekn...
the social engineering that went on/goes on without anyone having a say in it is pretty eye opening...mind you, john prescott with his pathfinder initiative tried to do the same within the last ten years with the same outcome...

I seem to remember reading way back ('70s, probably) that the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea had some of the poorest streets in London, as well as some of the richest.
I bet that's changed.

eusebiovic. I only watched a few minutes of the one tonight. Pushed "record" and went back to what I'm meant to be doing, so I'll be watching it later on.
I grew up in west London, and know quite a few people whose families are from Pimlico, Ladbroke Grove, S. Bush etc. Most were offered large houses/flats there for next to nothing, at one time or another. None of them took up the offer, they moved into new council or housing association places instead.
Must've seemed the smart thing to do at the time, as all those areas were seriously rundown. If you'd told them that one day people would be paying millions to move into their old homes, I should think they'd have had you certified.

Fantastic program. Lots of people would have gone on to better lives and who knows what may or may not have happened but all seems really shocking to see it now. Particularly when you see the value of so many of the old terraced houses ( including mine).

some clients i know recently bought industrial units in pritchards rd, just behind the gas tanker..sounds very close to your family once lived. it must feel strange to go back to your old manor & see so many changes..the city fringes have seen the most development .. for eg.. loads of shoreditch/hoxton has been either demolished or converted from industrial buildings to tidy offices & residential.

Cheers! I will watch that...
Makes me sad to watch stuff like that...did you see the row of Georgian houses at the end going for £750,000 and they were condemned as slums but escaped because the council ran out of money to destroy them...
A bit like the houses around Brick Lane & Spitalfields...
