Re: Your nan

She doesn't live anywhere much now, just a call from my dad that she passed away this morning. Although she'd pretty much lost it towards the end, I'm going to miss her, the days as a kid on the farm chasing chooks, playing cribbage, her old colonial rug, watching tennis together & the difference about what was "proper" & what wasn't. My dad is as stoic as they come though, so the missus knows where I get it from now.

I never knew either of my grandmothers. Or grandfathers, for that matter.
Before my parents' generation, the people in my family used to drop down dead of consumption by the age of 45.
My parents refused to be denied their rightful, painful, lungy death by advances in modern science - they made sure of it by being heavy, lifelong, belligerent smokers. However, it took them until they were in their 70s to die from lung disease.

Both lived near the ground. One behind Queens Market and the other off Harold Road.
But my Grandad worked at Dagenham Ford, as I would imagine a lot did.

Seems like a lot of our nans are from the same sort of area.. Mine was from silver town before she moved to the 'nam.
My hero she is - parents were killed in the blitz so rather than split her brothers and sisters up she looked after all 6 of them (she was 14) during the height of the blitz. 86 and still going strong, still saying "luv a duck". My fucking hero

My nan lived in Downing Road near to the Heathway, Dagenham. Later she moved to an old folks place near the cross keys pub. Died after moving to Wickford.

Neither of my Nan's lived in Dagenham. One was from Hackney and the other, who is still going strong, lives in East Ham. She spends most of her time down the Bingo, good luck to her. I often pop in before home games then take a stroll to the ground.

My maternal Nan was born in Hackney and died in Hackney. Apart from an occasional outing to Southend or Clacton she never ventured outside of London as far as I know. She died aged 78 when I was six.
My paternal Nan was from Southwark and died when I was a baby, so I never knew her.

One lived in Manor Park (on Manor Park Road) and the other lived in East Ham - one of the roads off of Katherine Road.
