Have you ever just got up and walked before?
I mean from a work related arena?

I was at the end of my tether with my job/boss, pressures of work etc and yesterday just put my jacket on and walked out the office. I know it is unprofessional but I can't be there for one more minute. I sent a text messgae to my boss to tell him that I've gone but he hasn't responded as of yet.

Does anyone know where I stand here legally, as I did sign a contract which states a months notice both ways. And can they mention this if asked for a reference from a future employer.

I'm not too bothered about being paid what I'm owed as I have enough for at least a year to get by, although I expect to be at another gig well before then.

Cheers.

No. I want to keep my job. I don't think they'd look favourably upon me if I just upped and left the fries station in the middle of the lunchtime rush.

Re: Have you ever just got up and walked before?
Not quite walking, but I took a job once with some building contractors in Harold Hill, they had made it big during the boom in the mid 80's and had come unstuck when everything ground to a halt. Typical excesses by the two blokes who owned the firm, the chief accountant was appointed by the administrators and I was there to help run the accounts department while he battled with creditors.

After a couple of weeks, I told the boss he was wasting his time, the company would never return to profitability (a dangerous position, to carry on trading knowing the firm to be insolvent can render individuals liable), and he agreed and started winding up proceedings, which meant I was out of work. That was when I decided to get out of building and construction. Too much boom and bust.

Rather than walk out a get a blemish on your reference just flip the burgers for another week. Before you know it KFC will be recruiting in your area.

Surely the solution is just to carry on in yout role and do the bare minimum, stress-free as (1) it's easier to find another job if you're currently employed (2) you'll still be getting paid and (3) if they sack you you'll get a nice pay-off.

I'd give them written notice as back up then call your boss and state that you're not working your notice.... they won't pay you and that's end of really..... obviously you'll get a shit ref from them.

I was 3 days into a 6 month contract. Went for lunch, came back to find one woman in the office crying. Asked her why and she replied they'd made the line manager (who was training me) redundant, plus 2 other people.
The Director of the company asked me into his office, asked if I had any questions or problems to see him.
The next day, I never went back.

Re: Have you ever just got up and walked before?
I left a job more or less in this manner after 2 days, not proud of it, but right decision.

My line manager was away on the 2nd day so he had no inkling - I just went up to the HR chief and said that I'm not coming in tomorrow. The pay was awful and I thought it may be a useful for my future career, but after that short period of time realised I couldn't survive financially and that it was a massive step back in my career.

They won't be giving me a reference and it's not on my CV; but the following week at home, I came across my current job and so it worked out well in the end. I did feel like a prick leaving them in such a way.

They actually paid me for the 2 days work which was quite a surprise!

Re: Have you ever just got up and walked before?
Yes once in the UK.

On several occasions I have also sat down with a boss and said: look I dont want to be here any more and what is the earliest date I can leave, and been out within hours or days.

When you dont want to be somewhere, there is no point staying and the reality is that most bosses also understand that if you dont want to be some place they are better of without you

Re: Redknapp Sacked
I worked with a bloke who just fucked off from China one night leaving only a resignation Email.
I don't blame him from just leaving that shit hole but the overseas construction community for expats is quite a tight circle and once you do something like that people will find out what you did if you are applying for a knew job. No one bothers much with reading CVs , its all word of mouth recommendations.

When I was a kid working on site , I've walked off of many a site , in those days though you'd just get a start down the road, especially in the docklands boom

Re: Have you ever just got up and walked before?
No worries here.

They could have you for breach of contract but that won't be worth the bother or cost.

They should still pay you for all you are owed (including holiday pay) and walking out is not a reason to withhold wages

Good luck fella

"...can they mention this if asked for a reference from a future employer".

i doubt very much they'd give you a bad reference after just getting up and walking out on them. in fact, if it was me, i'd probably take you out for dinner where we could fabricate a nice story that will have you looking like a very desirable target for future employers.

OF COURSE THEY'LL FUCKIN GIVE YOU A BAD RAP!

Re: Have you ever just got up and walked before?
I went for a ciggarette break, finished my smoke, then got in the car and drove to the jobcentre on the way home.

I got a phonecall from my boss asking where I was and I told her I was in job centre. I never spoke to them again. I was paid for my hours, and I never struggled to get any other jobs after that, although I was just a teenager and it was for One2one (tmobile) call centre, and I guess they expect that sort of stuff.
