There's several things that make larger different to ale, 1. It's cold fermented( 5-12 c) and takes longer and uses special yeasts to do this. It's also top fermented. 2. It's rested for a longer time than ale( larger is German for rest). 3. There are dark and light largers 4. It is usually served cold, colder than ale. This reduces the taste and makes them a bit more bitter ( think coke when it's cold and when it's flat and warm).
The larger you have in football grounds tastes like cold fizzy water with some light coloration and a bit of alcohol. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't even brewed.

I like decent lagers (none of that Carling/Carlsberg/Fosters filth), but I also like Guiness and I like a variety of different ales.
But then I am great, so it's to be expected

I had a couple of bottles of Peroni at a party the other week. Probably the first lager I've drunk for 5 years or so. It tasted like sweetened piss water. Disgusting.

There is a country pub near Tunbridge Wells called the Queens Arms.
It used to have a sign outside stating "No Lager Served Here"... The sign has gone but they still don't serve lager.
Its very well supported

Ludo,
That's odd, must be the export which is gassy.
It's sold in bottles in Sainsbury's...closest you'll get to the German tap.
