Cheers baggins, not going for the football but the women. Interesting that they seem to like the English I've found in Europe people seem to love or hate the English not much ambivalence

Oh, the fan zone in Donetsk is shit. Out of the way and nothing much there. Avoid.

Re: Anyone been to the Ukraine?
Quick rundown.

Kiev

Great city, very cosmopolitan, quite a few English speakers. Friendly people.

Certain areas in the city centre are expensive, with food/drink matching London prices. Have a wander around though and you'll find loads of cheap drink and food places.

Fan zone thing is excellent, slap bang in the middle of the city (Independence Square I think it's called), with lots of tellys, food places, good atmosphere and 1.50 a pint for the local beer.

Try and use the Metro to get around, it's 20p a trip and piece of piss to use.

Donetsk

Very nice looking city in the centre, lots of parks and green spaces. Friendly people but be aware that not many speak English and communication can be an issue. Not lots of restaurants or choice of places to drink.

If you are going, take the address of your hotel/campsite in Ukrianian as most cabbies won't understand or be able to read English.

Not much to do, England fans head towards the Golden Lion pub.

Cabbies will try and rip you off all the time. Barter with the cheeky cunts and get the price down.

If you're travelling between cities, us the high speed train, it's excellent and very cheap too compared to English prices.

Er, thats it.

In general, it's a very nice, safe, friendly country. They seem to be very keen to make a good impression during the euros and seem to love the English too. If you're thinking of going for the footy, give it a go. Try and find somewhere nice to stay if you can, the camp site in Donetsk is a touch rough n ready and some didn't like that. Not quite sure what they were expecting but there you go.

yes, 1978. Odessa, Kiev and various shitholes in between. Lots of goosestepping soldiers. Bottle of vodka for a pack of chewing gum back then. Couldn't tell you what its like now, though apparently they play football.

Re: Anyone been to the Ukraine?
ok, dicksie, and lets also get selective amnesia about the great russian/ukrainian artists/composers/musicians/performers and writers.

Have you ever even heard of Bulgakov? One of the greatest writers this continent has ever seen.

I watched England mash the Swedes there last Friday, it's quite industrial looking, though it has some nice bits, a bloody great statue looks down over the city with a shield and sword to commerate the second world war.

Yes, I'm sure that's the case, sock son...

Let's forget completely about all of the great pioneers of science in disciplines such as medicine, philosophy and psychology; not to mention the genius inventors and engineers that this country has produced and who have helped shape the World that we live in...

If it's so great over there then why the fuck do they come over here in their droves?...

*Spits*

Perhaps they need to look on a lower culture sometimes. The Germans do the same.

WIfe lived in Ukraine for many years, I've spent a lot of time out there, it still amazes me.

Its very cheap in most places and you need to get away from the tourist areas to get the most of it. Great people, food takes some time to get used to.
