Dont fear, Wimbledon is here
Disappointed about your teams Euro exit?

Wondering which embarrassment you are going to support now?

Looking to find a use for that remaining facepaint?

Well good news! Wimbledon starts this week!

Dont get me wrong, I know he's not exactly English, but this doesnt guarantee he's going to win. Hopefully there are some good saffa tennis players England can nick in years to time.

Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika
Maluphakanyisw’ uphondo lwayo,
Yizwa imithandazo yethu,
Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo.

Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,
O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho,
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,
Setjhaba sa South Afrika – South Afrika.

Uit die blou van onse hemel,
Uit die diepte van ons see,
Oor ons ewige gebergtes,
Waar die kranse antwoord gee,

Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.

Sure, he's a true class act.

I can imagine him in 20 years time sitting in the royal box all suited and booted still looking good with the commentator whispering 'there's the great Roger Federer'

Always looks good BC.

I like Nadal but he doesn't look the part.

That Swiss suave fuck is the ultimate tennis player.

So glad to see him smash that fairweather fuck.

Murray is just no quite as good as the best.
Either he can step up a bit or they have to fall back.
Either way he's just short of the best.

Pancho - He looked good in his jumper afterwards too.

Federer even looks the part. Looks fucking quality on the court - pristine.

Murray looks like a jock on a local rec in his new oversized hand me down Adidas shirt.

Yes.

Panch does have a man-crush on Federer.

Which makes the frumpy wife all the more disappointing.

I haven't read any replies apart from Brucie's btw, so apologies if I'm repeating what anyone's already said.

Re: Dont fear, Wimbledon is here
You're right that Federer didn't dominate the whole thing - that's why Murray took a set and could quite easily have had a second (the second of the match) on another day. He - Federer - did step it up several gears after that, though, and I think what people are probably trying to say is that he was almost unplayable for certain points, even when Murray was making some astonishing returns.

Murray's major fault was having to second-serve almost all the time. They had a graphic pointing out how easy Federer had made this for him in the first two sets, with predictable and safe returns, but he really started to punish it as the game went on. I saw Murray do a similar thing for a spell against Tsonga - several whole service games without landing any first serves - and it's something he massively needs to work on IMO (easier said than done I know). Either that or develop a killer second serve which seems unlikely.

Other than that, I still don't like how much he looks like a 12 year old having a tantrum whenever it's not going his way, but ultimately I have no idea if that really does much for his opponent. Federer never seems to give a fuck either way unless you're playing well enough to really have him rattled in the first place. Oh and it seemed like Murray's knee or hamstring or something was giving him gyp for a lot of the match, which always, always seems to happen. A bit like Carlton will start grimacing and hopping around at some point in 99% of our games

Re: Dont fear, Wimbledon is here

Again, I really think you're missing the point here.

I was responding to the assertion that Federer was unplayable yesterday. He wasn't.

Murray had his chances but didn't take them. The result wasn't down to the fact that Federer dominated with a different level of tennis from start to finish. Far from it.

I used Nadal as an example as he is someoe who dominates Federer mentally in big matches. The facts and figures back this up. Obviously it's all hypothetical, but I doubt Nadal would have passed up the opportunity to go for the jugular.

Re: Dont fear, Wimbledon is here
I know where Brucie is coming from, it took a while for Fed to get going yesterday and Murray had a great chance to win the second set but blew it.

Also, there was a theory on the commentary that I had that the roof being closed suited Fed more than Murray.

That said, Fed is an absolute master and there should be no arguement that he is the best of all time now.

You can say that about anything though.

You could say that Tsonga would have beaten Federer, but it's a pointless statement.

You could say England would have beaten Spain in the European Championship final because we beat them last time we played them.

In the end, it's not that simple, and I think it's a bit of a silly statement to make. There's absolutely nothing to back it up on the evidence of the tournament in question. Nadal was knocked out early by an absolute nobody, and Federer was unbeatable, ruthlessly dispatching Djokovic and Murray with very little bother.

Brucie, murray needed to take that 2nd set, once he didn't, federer really owned him.

That is a statement of the rather obvious. I think you've missed my point though; namely that Federer was not unbeatable yesterday.

Re: Dont fear, Wimbledon is here
It really shows you things that the tv can't, doesn't it!

I've only been a couple of times, and only once to see top, top players (Federer vs Nadal) and it's just amazing.

When Federer winds up the big forehand, it's just something to behold.

Re: Dont fear, Wimbledon is here
scorchio, my 1st time watching top players, i was stunned at the speed and power of the rallies, federer hit the ball so low over the net with power and spin, astonishing, not to mention some of his stunning drop shots.

El Scorchio 8:14 Mon Jul 9
Re: Dont fear, Wimbledon is here
I've seen Federer live too. The forehand up close is incredible.

Also the way he shifts from backspin to topspin on the backhand. Brilliant.

Re: Dont fear, Wimbledon is here
I was on centre court yesterday, 5 rows from front, you don't realise how good they are until you see them live, the speed and spin they use on the shots is amazing to watch. Fantastic rallies.
Federer was just amazing yesterday but murray is quality too and he will always be in with a shout of a slam in the next few years.

Re: Dont fear, Wimbledon is here
But Nadal got nowhere near the final. He lost to some bloke no-one's ever even heard of.

He didn't even earn the right to face Murray in the semis, let alone Federer in the final.

Re: Dont fear, Wimbledon is here
you're right, from the third set onwards

My point is simply that doing that from 2-0 down would have been another thing altogether from a mental perspective.

Murray could and should have gone 2-0 up. He knows that which probably hurts him even more.

Brucies_Star_Prize 12:40 Mon Jul 9
Re: Dont fear, Wimbledon is here
Just checked and Nadal has an 8-2 slam record over Federer.
