Official Tour de France thread....
Starts June 30th in Liege.

Can Wiggins bring it home or will Cadel Evans retain the title?
No Andy Schleck or Thor Hushovd apparently.

Bit too close to the Olympics so hopefully all the Brits will get through unscathed.

I can't wait till Saturday, It's the only time of year my tv is on during the day.

Ivan Basso is an obvious one I'd forgotten

Dolittle,
Of those who have admitted doping, the first name that comes to mind is Valverde who won a stage.

Also, I remember Scarponi, Basso and Fofonov amongst riders taking part as having in the past tested positive.

I can't think off the top of my head of any other riders...

Stage winner Valverde for example.

Anyone know how many ex-dopers there are still on the Tour?

Millar
Vinokourov
Contador (next year)

any more?

A Wiggins victory is far from a formality in the Olympics time-trial. The cruciasl question will be whether Tony Martin is in top shape. after a difficult Tour de France.

In the last World Championships in 2011, he beat Wiggins by over a minute in the time trial. He was unlucky in the prologue and injured by the time trial.

Doolittle, Wiggins beat Cancellara by 57 seconds in the stage 9 TT.

not sure how you can say Wiggo had the measure of Cancellara in the first time trial - he was beaten by him - and was only half a second faster than Chabanel.

not trying to put a downer on Wiggins achievements but it would have been a better contest if so many big names (and I haven't even mention Shleck or Contador) hadn't have pulled out.

Next year I expect Sky to find themselves in a real battle.

I was just having a look at the course for the Vuelta - looks as a few posters have mentioned incredibly tough with several mountain-top finishes. Well worth watching especially as Contador will be making his come-back and several of the injured riders from the TDF will take part.

Dicksie - too much detail. But, I came across some evidence to support your excellent argumentation - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/6615953.stm

IS IT FAIR TO ASSUME THAT TONY BLAIR AND NEW LABOUR ACTIVELY AND PURPOSELY DECIDED AGAINST INTRODUCING STRINGENT DRUG-TESTING OF OTHER SPORTING STARS IN THE HOPE THAT BRITISH SPORTSMEN COULD EXCEL IN EVENTS THROUGH THE USE OF ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES AND THUS CHEATING THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS?...

Why does picksie have to shout?

Is it a medication issue?

Brussels Sprout 5:02 Mon Jul 23
Re: Official Tour de France thread....
Dicksie - Haha!

Except, I forgot to add that following the David Millar scandal, British cycling sought to excel through hard work, professionalism and above all rejecting all forms of doping. This led directly to the triumph of Wiggins this year.

And this happened during the Tony Blair and New Labour Government.

*Scrapes the barrel*

PERHAPS, DICKSIE, YOU CAN ASK WHY THIS DID NOT ALSO HAPPEN IN OTHER SPORTS?

IS IT FAIR TO ASSUME THAT TONY BLAIR AND NEW LABOUR ADVOCATED BRITISH CYCLISTS TAKING ALL KINDS OF ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES IN THE HOPE OF CHEATING THEIR WAY TO THE WORLD-ACCLAIMED TOUR DE FRANCE PODIUM?...

Re: Official Tour de France thread....
dicksie, sadly the Brits weren't law-abiding - our leading rider at that time, David Millar, was caught out as a doper too.

PERHAPS, THOUGH, YOU CAN BLAME NEW LABOUR FOR THE FACT THAT THE BRITS DOPED TOO!

IS IT FAIR TO ASSUME THAT IF TONY BLAIR HAD OF INTRODUCED MORE STRINGENT DRUG-TESTING FOR TOUR DE FRANCE CYCLISTS IN THE LATE-90S/EARLY NOUGHTIES THAT THE LAW-ABIDING BRITS MAY HAVE ACTUALLY WON THE WORLD-ACCLAIMED EVENT SOME TIME AGO NOW?...

Re: Official Tour de France thread....
Would this be a test cricketer saying that cycling is boring? How odd.

I like both.

Not sure that Chavenel and Martin would have got close in the TT as Wiggins had them in the Criterium Dauphine as well and he had the measure of Cancellara in the first one.

Looking forward to the Olympics now.
