Rodding a drain, how hard can it be?
Well? I think it's between the surface drain and the manhole. Borrowing some rods to do it, but don't have a fucking scooby what to do with them.... Guess I just ram them down there?

Any tips?

Mea Culpe

I am involved in the poo and wee industry.

The enemy of the drain is fat, oil and grease or FOG as we experts refer to it.

Not bad for an electronic/electrical engineer/lawyer/accountant/health and safety expert eh?

RODDING A DRAIN!

Is this some kind of reference to anal sex?

As One Rad said, you MUST turn the rods clockwise as you push them into the drain, otherwise they will unscrew half way along and you will be in trouble.

Regarding sulphuric acid; Do not use it, it does not rot the pipes (well, it will eventually) it eats the pva cement that joins the pipes together.

It will do similar to the joints in your interceptors and outside drain lines as well as being universally loathed by the water companies because it is so aggressive. DO NOT USE ONE SHOT, its fucking dangerous in the hands of an amateur.

You can buy citrus based acids or even enzyme/bacteria dosing chemicals, which, while they take longer (leave over night) are a lot less aggressive and will still clear or soften any blockages.

Had to do this for the first time a few years back.

Was a bit down on the old reddies, so though I'd have a go myself rather than fork out loads for someone else to do it.

It really is just a case of having a good old poke.

Only tip is to turn the rods to the right. That way they don't unscrew and come off mid-drain!

and the answer is...

Really easy. Don't waste money on Dyna-rod or any drain clearing people, just buy some rods.

Give the rod a twist while you're ramming it down the drain.

Don't pour sulphuric acid down the sink. I can confirm it clears all the shit out of the pipes and you will have freeflowing water, however it also melts all the plastic and you will end up with holes in your pipes. So slightly more free flowing than is required.

Shreky solves your plumbing problems.

It's a bit like giving one to 55 year old woman who's had a good life.

Whack it in as hard as you can and hope for the best. Ok the smell will be horrendous and you won't even touch the sides but she'll be grateful and you'll be yourself after a really good shower.
