My opening of the Bomber Command Memorial photos. Green Park, London 26/06/2012.
|
|
Just a few photos to show you WHOers of some of the veterans, widows and serving Airmen and women of the Royal Air Force at the opening of the Bomber Command Memorial.
A lovely sunny day was arranged by someone up there and stupidly I imagined it being a mostly happy occasion. After all, a permanent monument to the 55,573 brave souls who gave their lives and the countless others horribly injured after all these years is a good thing, isn't it?
To tell you the truth I felt a bit grubby taking these, even though I was asked to. You can see the pain etched permanently on these old boys and girls faces like it happened yesterday.
I hope you find them as moving as I did.
Lest we forget.

Chim... Yeah read that in the Gibsons/Dambusters book.... I think it's an absolute outrage they are changing the Labs name... whatever next?? Go up and desecrate his gravestone at RAF Scampton???

Thanks again chaps.
NS, apparently Guy Gibson's Labrador's name was also the secret codeword to signify that the dam had been breached. I'd love to hear a recording of that.
(replace the word 'digger') "HQ are you receiving? Digger, Digger, Digger. I repeat, Digger, Digger Digger".

Great job there Chim.... very poignant... this upset me though....
"Steven Fry is writing the screenplay for the new Dambusters film, directed by Lord of the rings director Peter Jackson. The dog will be renamed 'Digger', if you were wondering". :-(

That old boy with his tongue out was brilliant. He looked all sullen and sunken in his wheelchair and I went to take a discrete shot (I thought) and he poked his tongue out, nudged his mate and pointed at me laughing.
It said a lot about how old boys have different ways of dealing with what they must have seen.
Dougie told me that even when he saw bombers explode right in front of him he thought 'they probably bailed out and were taken prisoner. He knew in the back of his mind that even if they DID survive the explosion and 'chuted down they would probably be hacked to death by the 'civilians' with shovels and pitchforks.
Swiss, tell me about Dresden then. What do you know?

Good stuff that, chim - respectfully unintrusive (is that a word?) yet captures the mood, I feel.
The old chap in the second shot. Was that a reaction to him clocking you at work? He's got a look of "devilment" about him; not anger, but just what seemed to be a feeling that "we were just doing our jobs, thanks for the lumps of rock but is the bar open yet?"

Great photos.... as you say, good job they had good weather, imagine if it had been like almost every other day we have had lately.
Hope they keep the Lanc flying for a long, long time..... I've been lucky enough to see it flying several times now, magnificent sight.

I had about a millisecond to take that Lanc shot. It came over low and very fast. I was amazed I got anything other than blue sky!

Thanks mate.
Does the picture of the old lady (not Camilla Parker Bowles) in the lovely hat and dark glasses come across properly? I felt really bad about taking it, that, and the deaf and blind veteran.
