Re: 'Possible Terrorist incident' on M6 Toll Road
Something altogether more serious is happened on the M1 earlier this week (from The Times) - clearly police were on tenterhooks well before this M6 incident:

Seven terror arrests after guns found hidden in car on M1

Seven men have been arrested on suspicion of terror offences after firearms and other weapons were found “hidden” in a car on the M1, police said today.
West Midlands Police said one man from West Yorkshire and six from the West Midlands are being questioned on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism following a series of arrests this week.
A spokesman said: “The arrests followed a routine stop of a vehicle by police on the M1 motorway in South Yorkshire on Saturday (June 30). The car was impounded on suspicion of having no insurance.
“Firearms, offensive weapons and other material were later found hidden inside, prompting police to take action to trace and arrest the driver, passenger and others suspected of being involved.”
Police said three men aged 23, 26 and 27 from Sparkhill, Birmingham, were arrested on Tuesday morning.
Three more suspects, a 22-year-old from Alum Rock, Birmingham, a 24-year-old from the Moseley area of the city, and a 22-year-old from Smethwick, West Midlands, were arrested on Wednesday evening.
A 43-year old man from Kirklees, West Yorkshire, was detained yesterday.
Detective Chief Superintendent Kenny Bell, head of the West Midlands Counter-Terrorism Unit, said: “As soon as the items were discovered in the impounded vehicle, our priority was to protect the public by pursuing and arresting those we believed to be involved.”
News of the arrests came the day after armed police battered down the front door of a house and threw in smoke grenades to arrest three brothers in an anti-terrorism operation a mile from the Olympic Park.
Scotland Yard raided the house in Stratford, East London, three weeks before the opening ceremony of the Games. They used a Taser gun to stun one of the suspects.
Firearms officers were deployed in the 4am raid because of fears that someone at the house might have a weapon. One of the three brothers, aged 26, 24 and 18, is a former Metropolitan Police community support officer.
In linked arrests in Ealing, West London, a man of 21 and a woman of 30 were detained at separate homes and another man was arrested on the street in West London.
The man detained on the street has been identified as Richard Dart, 29, of Weymouth, Dorset, a convert to Islam and a radical activist.
The group, which is suspected of plotting an Islamist terrorist attack in Britain, has been under surveillance by MI5 for several months. Police insisted that there was no suggestion that an attack was imminent and said that the raids were not connected to the Olympic Games.
However, The Times understands that the proximity of the house in Stratford to the Olympic Park and the Games being about to open influenced the decision to arrest people who had been “on the radar” for some time.
In another sign of pre-Olympic nerves, Staffordshire Police sealed off the M6 toll motorway after receiving a 999 call saying that vapour was emerging from a coach passenger’s bag.
Armed police, chemical decontamination equipment, military bomb disposal units and dozens of firefighters were sent to the scene in Weeford, near Lichfield, as passengers were ordered off the coach at gunpoint.
A search of the vehicle showed that the vapour had come from a fake electronic cigarette.

It was lucky that this happened on the m6 toll road so the m6 could remain open, a great show of anti terror force to keep us all terrified just before the Olympics.

Fake cigarette in a carrier bag apparently

Sounds like massive civil liberties abuses to me (Or maybe not with the "Anti terrorism laws"

Armed officers, troops, firefighters and bomb disposal experts all went to the scene.

Jenny Lister, who was on the coach, said when she got off "there were armed police aiming at us".
A passenger on the bus said they had seen "vapour"
She said: "We... were told to sit in rows and not talk to each other."

The thing is it appears that no-one poured anything into any box. Bet it was some 75 year old busybody with poor eyesight. Probably mistook some Portugese bloke trying to give up smoking for one of those terrible brown people.

I love it how people automatically assume if something looks a bit suspect, they think it's an act of terrorisim.

LAD - i am afraid that's what happens when the islands have been used to terrorism from the IRA down the years and in recent times by Islamists -

I can honestly understand the polices reaction from the information that they had.

I can't understand the type of idiot that calls the police over an electric cigarette. Are people really that fucking stupid?

Re: 'Possible Terrorist incident' on M6 Toll Road
Latest Police admission, it was someone with one of those electronic cigarette things to help you quit.

I once saw an interview with head of Met terrorism bloke where he said there were dozens of potential terror type reports every day... DOZENS. The Police then have to make a judgement. They made a massively wrong judgement in this case. I suspect if it was the Met and not some bunch of Northern yokels they would not have acted in this manner. So yes, twats... as is the person who "reported" this.

Any asian could stand in the middle of a street stark bollock naked and scream he's got a bomb and people would still shit themselves!

Bombs...Moooslims....Terror!..Panic...An ger...People saying things I didn't personally approve!
Methinks that the sense of outrage is a tad out of proportion here, maybe it's some sort of issue directly relating to stupidity.

Re: 'Possible Terrorist incident' on M6 Toll Road
I got a call from the wife earlier this week to say it was all kicking off in our street, I flew back round to find an Asian guy on the floor outside our house, long flowing beard, shaved head and wearing a blue boiler suit !
He'd seemingly taken a bit of a kicking by OB, there were 8 marked cars, 2 vans, plus 2 carloads of armed undercover who had him in their sights as I returned - naturally assumed it was a foiled terrorist outrage (as you do) turned out he'd tried to jack the Securicor van at Waitrose up the road but it hadn't turned out that well ! So much for stereotypes eh?!
