Seabright Arms - off Hackney Road
I went to a beer tasting yesterday for the flegling "Hackney Brewery" (I kid you not) and visited this place for the first time in years...

It used to be a bit of a dive...with disco and karaoke (with a traffic light!) and has a basement music hall (which is still there) and is still a lovely wood-pannelled pub with coloured glass and lead windows.

The decor is the same but the bar staff were lovely ladies and I had the best burger since I can recall and a superb selection of quality beers from here and abroad.

Does anybody remember this place? It's down the little alleyway which links to Coate Street.

There was a boxing ring in the cellar in the 70s.

What a farce that is too.

The Hare on Cambridge Heath Road is one of my favourites...a pal of mine has a furniture workshop around the corner by the canal...and whenever I went around to help him out in busy times we'd always end up in there.

A good, solid unpretentious boozer

Re: Seabright Arms - off Hackney Road
I work right near there and the pub was shut for a while after the previous management got busted for something - meaning it was shut down and ready to be sold off for flats. But the council (in a rare move) objected to the plans and the pub stayed. Believe some locals wanted it open and ones right near it wanted it closed but the drinkers won and now we have a nice pub open again. Yes there are a few tossers in there but overall a victory for east london pubs.

The Albions a good un and not far away and so is The Harp on Cambridge Heath Road. The Marksman on Hackney Road also OK. Anyone know what happened to The British Lion on Hackney Road. That looked like a solid local pub but now all boarded up

I gigged at the Seabright back in the early 80's; weird little boozer - not the sort you would think would have live music. Remember we had a cracking support band that did a really memorable song "The World is Uncle Sam's Backyard" where the title was repeated in the chorus over the last few lines of the song and then ended "The World is Uncle Sam's ...". Can't remember the fucking name of the band though.

I fitted that rail, that alleyway is a bit spooky at night

The stage is no longer there...it's now a seating area with the DJ decks shoved in the corner but the curtain rail still runs along the ceiling.

And it still had the traffic light!

I worked on the re-furb late 80's early 90's. The wood wall panels arnt original, if you look closley there oak kitchen doors. Is the little stage still in the corner with red curtains?

I can vouch for the burgers - Top Notch!

Chips were a bit soggy...apparently drizzled with truffle oil (ahem)

I still prefer Sarsons myself...

There were a couple of beardy blokes with 70's NHS specs and geography teacher jackets with faux leather elbow patches and Hitler moustache - I just enjoyed chatting up their tasty girlfriends ;-)

...but thankfully it was largely a good crowd in there...

Was a working-class boozer, probablyone of the last in Befnal green, a leftover of its 80's heyday (Martins, Septembers, Camdens etc etc). I worked with someone who used to drink in there circa 2003, he was rough as guts so I imaginethe rest of the clientele were too.
Now like everywhere else round there being taken over by skinny blokes who wear those big 80's glasses with beards and that shaved back&sides and long on top haricut.
And dont forget the drainpipe jeans, baseball boots and a stripey t-shirt.
"Oh I'll have a pint of that beer brewed in Laos by colour-blind monks, you know the one made with snakes thyroid glands". Only £6.50 a half.

I lived in that tower block at the bottom of Redwald Rd since it was refurbished back in 2001.
Interesting reading the Chatsworth Rd feature.
