The 1980s, surely the greatest decade
|
|
The 80s were the decade i grew up in, i went to school in, had my first kiss, I 1st fell in love, were the last days of the Cold War, had the greatest movies (Scarface, Bladerunner), best TV (The A Team, Miami Vice), greatest football (1982 &1986 World Cups, West Ham 1986), best fashions, comedy and greatest music (New Order, Depeche Mode, Guns 'n' Roses, Stone Roses). My second favourite decade would be 40AD to 50AD when the Romans invaded & we finally got wine and central heating.

your favourite decade must shirley depend on what kind of life you had. If you had a miserable childhood then it probably wont be that one. Its between the 70s and 80s for me. In 70s I was 6-15 and loved it for having no responsibilities, out playing football with my mates. In 80s I was 16-25 and really got into music, girls, lads holidays, independance etc Can't choose between them

The 80s certainly saw some of the best and worst for me and have certainly left their mark, mostly for the good i hope. They started pretty awful and then after 82 ended got better n better. Dont start me on the politics though as that bullshit was,a large factor in contributing to the awful start. Fondly remembered on a personal level though after the start. Then again things aint bad now either

It's amazing how many studs and wild drug taking party goers now have a life where they spend half of it on an interent forum.
Where did it all go wrong?

well that wasn't hard - the country was a mess the tail end of an oil crisis and global recession didn't help.
Remind yourself that Telecoms were going through a transistional period - and she got lucky with that one. Because she broke up the GPO monoploy - it wasn't hard to garner a profit from one of the industrial sectors that the UK excelled at - and an industry that was also "footloose" and could spread itself internationally and buy out other antiquated telco's around the world.
How has BT done post de regulation?
Shite
From world class company - to 2 bob contender The only profit they make is by leasing out the closed loop fibre network they installed in the mid 80's.
Don't kid yourself that all or nationalised industries were bohemoths unable to change to the new economic climate.
She dismantled freehold dozens of industries where the UK could hold it's own - and hold it's head up and say that it was world class.
They were all mismanaged and had massive over capacites when she got hold of them - and they were all sold off for asset striping and to fill the coffers.
Also don't get me started on the rape of society - investment could have been our long term vision - instead she went for the cashing in of our grandparents savings

Claret. Are we worse off than the 60s or 70s? Are our telecoms and airlines better or worse than in pre privatisation? Thatcher reflected public mood.

load of shite - Thatcher turned nothing around - she merely stiped down to the boan an overweight industrial dinosaur. With investment in all sectors we might not be in this shambles today - where we are held at ransom to footloose privately owned business sectors.
And the boom time in the 80's was of course nothing to do with the world economic climate being instigated at the time by the enormous unsubstainable financial bubbles being bullt up across the globe in the 80-90's
Credit does not equal wealyth without meaningful colateral
I suggest you read a book or two before spouting meaninless rhetoric

Most people seem to think the decade they came of age in is the greatest.
The 80s for me was generally pretty barren for music, films and books. A great era for leftfield comedy though, and of course one of the golden ages for videogames.
