Shop's own-brand tea bags. Three Colours Red's second album. Any T-shirt in a size without at least one X in front of its L. The Mill is no stranger to the immediately regretted purchase. And neither are Liverpool. The Reds' unceremonious flogging of Carroll – to anyone who's willing to buy rather than borrow – will raise funds for an unlikely £15m bid for Arsenal's Theo Walcott. Brendan Rodgers is "desperate" to sign the Gunners' winger, reckons the Sun, but he'll face competition from Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

In wonderkid news, Manchester City are ready to beat off competition from Arsenal and Tottenham for the signature of Caen's 17-year-old striking sensation M'Baye Niang. An offer of £6m would persuade the French side to do business, but any less would only provoke the wrath of Caen.

In wondertoddler news, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa are forming an orderly queue in front of Birmingham's 13-year-old Foday Nabay. Blues will be due compensation of around £65,000 for the central midfielder who was born in 1998. 1998!

Internazionale have offered Julio César to Tottenham. The goalkeeper has apparently been told he will not be first choice at the San Siro next season. Spurs were keen on Lyon's Hugo Lloris, but may have had their heads turned by the Brazillian stopper's chiselled jaw.

Manchester City are "monitoring" Celtic's Victor Wanyama. City want the Kenyan midfielder to provide back up for Yaya Touré, what with Garry Barry crocked and Nigel de Jong eyeing the exit. Liverpool, Newcastle and QPR are also interested in the 21-year-old.

Manchester United will offer £10m to Everton for Leighton Baines. Everton want £15m. United won't pay it. Everton say that's the price, take it or leave it. United say fine, be like that, we're off. Everton say now don't be hasty, this is quality goods is this, takes good free-kicks and everything. United say we'll think about it.

West Ham are edging closer to a £5m move for Sochaux striker Modibo Maïga. Stoke and Reading are loitering with intent should the deal collapse.

Aston Villa are on the brink of an £8m deal for Feyenoord centre-back Ron Vlaar.

Stoke have been told they will have to pay £2.2m if they want USA! USA! USA! midfielder Geoff Cameron of Houston Dynamo. That's £500,000 more than Stoke are willing to pay.

Luka Modric is close to a £30m move to Real Madrzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ...

Cardiff will tell Fulham to do one with their £2.5m offer for Peter Whittingham.

WEST HAM & NEWCASTLE CHASE ANDY CARROLL

By George Scott

A £15m West Ham bid for Andy Carroll last night sparked off a tug-of-war with former club Newcastle.
Promoted Hammers have made a club record offer to sign the Liverpool striker permanently.

But Newcastle yesterday made contact with Kop bosses and tabled an offer to take him on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent switch.

And although Liverpool last night rejected Toon’s offer, sources hinted Carroll would welcome a return to his home- town club, who sold him to Liverpool for £35m inJanuary of last year.

West Ham are desperate to mark their return to the Premier League with a move for the England international and had also been considering a season-long loan.
But it is understood Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has now decided he wants to sign Carroll outright and is ready to break the bank to do it.

The England striker is back from holiday this week, but remains desperate to prove his worth to new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.
The 23-year-old will hold talks with Rodgers when he joins up with the squad on their pre-season tour of the USA and will try to persuade him he can fit in with his plans.
But after the arrival of Fabio Borini from Roma for £10.5m, the big hitman’s Anfield days appear to be numbered.

Aston Villa, Fulham and AC Milan have also expressed an interest.

But West Ham hope the presence of Carroll’s good friend and ex-Newcastle team-mate Kevin Nolan at Upton Park will swing it.
The pair lived together as part of Carroll’s bail conditions while he awaited trial on an assault charge.

The Hammers’ current record transfer fee is the £10m paid to Brescia for Savio Nsereko in 2009.

Villa boss Paul Lambert yesterday confirmed they want Carroll on loan, saying: “If we could get him, it would be great.”

Dev Squad end Moscow stay with win

Ian Hendon's side beat Besiktas 4-0 to end the VTB Lev Yashin Cup on a high

West Ham United's Development Squad ended their pre-season trip to Russia on a high on Sunday.

The Hammers beat Turkish club Besiktas 4-0 to finish fifth in the VTB Lev Yashin Cup in Moscow - a prestigious international Under-21 competition - ensuring Ian Hendon's side would have a victory to celebrate from their five-day stay in the Russian capital.

Like Besiktas, West Ham had been defeated in each of their two group-stage fixtures, being edged out 2-0 by German club Freiburg on Thursday and losing 3-1 to host club Dynamo Moscow on Friday.

After a training session and a guided sight-seeing tour of Moscow on Saturday that saw the squad visit the Kremlin and Red Square, Hendon's youngsters returned to the pitch in style on Sunday evening.

Played at the Luzhniki Olympic Complex, the fifth-place play-off match was a one-sided affair as the Hammers hit their stride from the kick-off.

Matthias Fanimo put West Ham in front with a fine individual effort to give the English side a 1-0 half-time lead. After the break Kieran Sadlier, Sebastian Lletget and Frazer Shaw added further goals to give the final scoreline a convincing appearance.

The Development Squad ended their trip by attending the closing ceremony at the Yantar Stadium, where the players and staff mingled with their counterparts from the five other sides involved - Besiktas, Freiburg, Dynamo Moscow, Malaga and the Mexico Under-19 national team.

Hendon and his players will fly back to London on Monday before returning to training and continuing their pre-season preparations by travelling to Grays Athletic on Friday evening.

Hammers prepare Carroll bid

By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

West Ham United are hoping to capitalise on the uncertainty surrounding Andy Carroll's future at Anfield by making a move to sign the Liverpool striker.

The Reds have already held talks with Newcastle, Fulham and the Hammers, but so far are yet to receive a bid that meets their expectations.

Liverpool bought Carroll for £35 million and are prepared to cut their losses, but after sounding out the Anfield club, sources at West Ham claim the Reds will only accept a drop of £15 million.

Newcastle, who offered to cover a small portion of Carroll's £80,000-a-week salary, had a loan bid rejected on Sunday night and now West Ham are ready to test the water, despite Liverpool being keen to secure a permanent deal.

West Ham have the best chance to snap up Carroll because of the links to the striker through Kevin Nolan and manager Sam Allardyce during their time at St. James' Park, but also because all three share the same agent.

But West Ham won't buy Carroll out right as a Hammers insider told ESPN: "West Ham are only interested in loan with option to buy."

West Ham cannot afford to buy Carroll outright unless they are still in the Premier League at the end of the season, and Allardyce might want to gamble that Carroll's presence would achieve the clubs status in the top flight.

However, with the east end club in debt, that is not something the club can gamble with. If West Ham and Liverpool can reach a compromise on that issue, than Carroll could be on his way to Upton Park.
