The inexorable fall of Barry Davies.
Was, for me, easily the best commentator the BBC had for football, but for some reason they always preferred the housewives choice cuddly John bloody Motson. At least Davies called it as he saw it and wasn't afraid of calling a bad foul exactly what it was.

Now ive just found him commentating on the women's hockey. I know he's always done hockey, but still don't understand why MOTD just got rid of him.

Why is he doing to though?? I have always quite liked Lineker but he is much, much better when he takes things seriously and is more reflective and opinionated.

He has a good knowledge of sport and it comes across when he takes it seriously.

So why is he turning into a cliche ridden, wisecracking, puppet parody of himself.

Stop being a twat Lineker and just do your fucking job.

Agreed. He's cringeworthy. It was obvious yesterday that Thorpe has no time for him.

is it me or is Lineker now, more than ever, trying to become the complete and utter cunt.

Bloke is a fucking embarrassment with his shitty quips and disturbing face changes and weird looks at the camera. He is becoming slightly eerie.

I think commentators, just like TV pundits (Lawro, Hansen etc) get cantankarous (sp?) over time (grumpy old man theory).
Their feet are well under the table and they think they are irreplaceable (see Andy Gray/Richard Keys).

Preferred Davies to Motson.

All time favourite commentator was David "One-Nil" Coleman.
Liked Brian Moore (Moore than just a commentator ...sorry couldnt resist), Hugh Johns and Gerald Sinstadt.
Hate(d) Tony Gubba, the woman commentator.

I think Grumpy Old Man Syndrome is affecting me now as most commentators irritate me before too long.

His commentary was when GB scored in the final against Germany and he said 'Where were the Germans? And frankly who cares'.

Boorish cheerleading rather than commentary but there you go.

That said i preferred his style to the trainspotting of Motson on football.
Peter Jones on the radio or Brian Moore on the tv were the kings though.

Colin Murray wrote a piece in one of the red tops recently proclaiming Davies and one piece of commentary in men's hockey that he will always be remembered for. Never heard it myself, then he seems to think it cool to recount a story of Davies drinking a whole 10 pints in one night and still being able to stand up straight, how the Irish have fallen.

Colin Murray is pointless, fighting talk is embarrassing, Baker shits all over him.

Barry Davies is well past it - age wise - especially regular commentating on football matches. He is now 75 ( don't know when the BBC dropped him as regular commentator on football but was probably as much him choosing easier gigs - than some windswept gantry on the N E Coast on November night.

I once had the somewhat bizarre experience of Barry Davies commentating over the public address system at Walthamstow Avenue on a match I was playing in - the highly prestigious Final of the 1973 Watney Essex Cup.

It was quite off putting to hear how crap you were while you were still playing a match.

Still got the winning tankard that he presented - he seemed a decent bloke - but looked and acted a lot older than he must have been.

Always liked him and preferred him to Motson.

Pearce is alright at the moment but used to get on my tits when he was on Channel 5. He got to know Bobby Moore quite well though when they were on Capital together, I think.

Nice to hear Tony Gubba last season as well. Proper old-school commentator who says what he sees rather than trying to be a comedy foil.

Yes, quite right!

(I also like Pearce - he shows that you can be totally partial and scrupulously fair at the same time, giving a lie to the BBC's silly approach to impartiality)

Strangely nobody has mentioned Martin Tyler? For me the best commentator of recent times and a gentleman to boot. Probably followed by Jonathan Pearce, whose knowledge on the game btw is unbelievable.

Out of idle curiosity (and not on the firm's PC) I just did a Google search for 'Pornographic Cinemas in London'. There appear to be a few left in the capital, two, maybe three tops and the information online is well over a year old.

The reviews are not good. But as one article explains, why pay £15 quid to watch 10 minutes of grot in some dingy basement when you can open your laptop and have an entire universe of the most eye-watering filth available to you at your fingertips (snigger) in relative comfort.

Actually, I take it all back, his commentary with Sir Trev co-commentating on the actua soccer 2 ps game was excellent.

I can imagine the corner of Sinstadt's moustache curling seductively as he smashed out a corker.

What was the film? Do such places still exist? How retro.

It says a lot about today's society when you can't even masturbate in a pornographic cinema
without being dug out.

I always liked Gerald Sinstadt. Until THAT thing wot happened.

Uuurgh, can't remember all details but wasn't he caught masturbating next to a horse in a gay cinema or summat.

Didn't see much if him on the BBC after that. Racists.
