The Critics’ Top Ten Greatest Films of All Time
|
|
Voted for once a decade. Interestingly, the most modern film on the list is A Space Odyssey from 1968.
Having been to see the Black Knight tonight and seeing the millions splurged on a cliché ridden story I'm wondering what we've lost in terms of cinema.
Here's the list.
1. Vertigo (Hitchcock, 1958) 2. Citizen Kane (Welles, 1941) 3. Tokyo Story (Ozu, 1953) 4. La Règle du jeu (Renoir, 1939) 5. Sunrise: a Song of Two Humans (Murnau, 1927) 6. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick, 1968) 7. The Searchers (Ford, 1956) 8. Man with a Movie Camera (Dziga Vertov, 1929) 9. The Passion of Joan of Arc (Dreyer, 1927) 10. 8 ½ (Fellini, 1963)

Vertigo on ITV3 now.
Hour in, don't recommend you start now if you've never seen it.

I agree with him. I go to the £3 Sky at the o2 on a Monday night.
Cant remember seeing a brilliant film there this year. Best so far was the Dark Knight Rises and that was at best decent.
Although I streamed a film called 'God Bless America' which was the fucking nuts. Loved it.

There is a great quote by Harry Cohn, boss of Columbia Pictures way back then. It goes along the lines of, 'I like good movies, too. But every year I have to kick 51 pieces of shit out onto the street to pay for one'.
I suspect nothing changes.
There are some great old movies, but not as many as some would have us believe, and in a much lesser proportion of total output than we are given to understand.

I make you right though Surface it should be much more highly rated than it is.
I don't really get on with pre-60's cinema to be honest. I find it far less rewarding and challenging than it is made out to be.
I can understand why people love it but only for the same reasons I prefer a book to a Kindle.

I'm not even particularly a fan. But any discussion about the greatest ever animated film that consists of a list of Japanese semi-animated anime films seems redundant.
I'm not saying that they aren't good films. They can all be 'my favourite', as can any film.

Haha, Morpheus I saw Spirited Away first and loved it too,
Surface, only blokes with kids are allowed to like Disney films which counts me out.

Its funny. By everything that a film buff holds dear Snow White would win hands down.
Cinematic innovation Technical excellence Originality Soundtrack Unanimous critical acclaim Enduring popularity and accessability
But it's a musical by Walt Disney, so it can't be any good.

I'm sure there were plenty of animated movies in the voting. I would argue there's isn't an animation that really stands out as the best of all time. I'd pick Totoro myself.

Wall.E was fucking genius. A Chaplin silent film mixed with a sci-fi story. Brilliant.
Sold, So you've seen nothing from Kurosawa, Kobayachi, Mizoguchi, Miyazaki, Kitano or Ozu? Just cos they were a bit naughty 70 years ago?
Your (significant) loss.

The sad bits from UP worked really well, but I was disappointed with the film as a whole.
Don't think it touches Wall.E or the Toy Story trilogy.
