Sky Sports understands Bristol City are closing in on a deal for West Ham striker Sam Baldock.

City are thought to have agreed a fee with West Ham for the 23-year-old and are hoping to persuade him to move to Ashton Gate.

A number of other clubs, including Charlton, are believed to be keeping tabs on Baldock's situation, but Bristol City are in pole position to land the former MK Dons hit-man.

Baldock, who joined West Ham last summer, scored five goals in his first nine games for the Hammers, but saw his first-team opportunities dry up in the second half of the season.

West Ham are prepared to offload Baldock with Hammers boss Sam Allardyce having a wealth of options in attack.

Robins boss Derek McInnes has made Baldock his top target as he looks to bring in a new striker ahead of the new season and is hopeful of tying up a deal for the talented forward.

Been told he wants to leave because Allardyce keeps calling him a dwarf and taking the piss out of him with Nolan

If Allardyce doesn't want him at all, then fair enough, but I doubt his wages amount to much.

Our squad is thin enough that he should get some opportunity.

Re: Bristol City closing in on Baldock SSN
From a WHU perspective if BFS is not going to play him then his wage can go towards another player.

Simples.

Re: Bristol City closing in on Baldock SSN
From a WHU perspective, I don't see the need to sell him unless he has asked to leave for first team football.

If I was his agent, I would advise him to stick around until January, as although chances of game time could be very short, it's a massive stage for him to prove himself if he gets the chance.

Makes you wonder why we bought him in the first place? I do hope someone got paid.

Are we losing a million quid on this deal?

I would rather keep Maynard than Baldock to be honest

Re: Bristol City closing in on Baldock SSN
Baldock's all round play at the back end of last season was very poor. He showed very little on the ball and made no impact whatsoever.

I think the beginning of the end for Baldock was when he was injured and come off against Derby, then Fat Sam started slagging off the fans as if we forced him to play 442 and Baldock?

Strange.

Re: Bristol City closing in on Baldock SSN
I wish people would shut up about Baldock 'not fitting into Allardyce's style of play'.

Maybe he just didn't rate him as highly as our other strikers?

Maynard isn't what some people would call an 'Allardyce type player', yet the gaffer seems to really rate him'.

Like many others, I felt Baldock had something and am sad to see him go. But selling a fringe player doesn't mean we're resigned to playing ugly football. I think a lot of people might be surprised by us this year.

We have better alternatives for Cole now. For Baldock, not so much.
