For the last 10+ years I have thrown every 1p and 2p I had when I got home in to a massive box ....
....I have never bothered to count it or even guess what was in there before and stupidly didn't bag up say £20 a time and mark it off when I reached set amounts.

I have spent the last few days (annual leave) but not every part of the day counting this mountain of coins with the help of my old man (we know how to live!) and I have £923.46 bloody hell!

Now, do I piss a bank off and arrange to get this changed or piss people off in a supermarket at one of thos machines?

I may also be right in thinking there is/was some prehistoric law about holding on to too many coins as it fucks up circulation or something?

Anyway, pays towards the summer hols (destination tbc)

Do you not spend the same amount of money over the year regardless so by saving a £2 coin you just spend £2 in another way? It's not as if it's save in a jar or chuck in the bin is it?

Why not just set up a standing order of £55 into a savimg account each month and get your £666 and just spend everything else?

My old man used to do this in giant wine bottles - our cleaning staff nicked it.

I save every £2 coin I get..
I count them up once a year & chuck them towards the holiday expenses.. Last year I got £666 the year before £918..
Amazing how they mount up & you don't even miss it....

The only I can think of that would be a better day than is, is putting all my CD's onto an Ipod.

I was thinking the same thing. Great minds.

cup of tea,

A long, long time ago I was a manager of several different branches of Our Price and later MVC (doubt many of you knew them). We needed to keep quite a lot of change in reserve in a safe, and every week (sometimes several times a week) had to either go to the bank for more or in later days have it delivered by Securicor; either way the bank charged us for getting change. I can't imagine that policy has changed, so you could approach the manager of a largish local shop/store and ask them if they want to exchange notes for some or all of your change. Obviously shops that tend to do more cash business would be the best ones, as well as ones that have prices that are generally £x.99. You might even find your local corner shops would be happy to oblige. Anything that gives less to the banks is good in my book!

How quaint.

Take the whole lot to my bank, the other day i got to the window and the woman was adding up a load of numbers on a sheet of paper.

I added them up and told her the answer before she got it and i was looking at it upside down!!

A cubic metre of copper weighs nearly 9 metric tonne.

Don't let your box be too big, or stand on a weak point of the floor...

Same, anything silver goes in one pot, everything bronze in another. Only coins I ever take out with me are £1 and 50p. Every few months I take it all down sainsburys and get a score or so

You can't really just stroll down the road with 70,000 coins though can you, must weigh a fucking ton.

As per Gavros, Natwest in canary Wharf said they will do it for free at their machines, better than the 7% you get charged at a supermarket.

If you have a HSBC account you can cash it in at one of their coin machines for free.
