Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
Cool - I will wait and see what happens with it.

He also did some lovely stuff like messin up our flooring so we had to buy an extra box as he was one piece short. He then used half the new box to fill one small space and claimed that the box was damaged when he opened it - but he didn't tell us that, and one piece is fitted with a hole in it, the other pieces he hid in the skip. I've tried complaining to the supplier (in fairness I don't doubt it was already broken as all the pieces are damaged in the same place in one corner as if it was dropped in transit) but the supplier just said pretty much 'screw you you've used half the box I can't help.'

I hate people

Yeah doubtful he going do anything other than threaten any action
Tell him you expect to hear from his solicitor and therefore stop any contact between you both

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
Yeah I'm thinking as much - he's basically just added random amounts for random 'extras' he says he's done that we never agreed any prices for as the work was going along.

He's also threatened the whole small claims court thing, but I recorded the conversation we had where I pointed out the issues and he got abusive and stormed out so I'm not sure what he's expecting to happen from it

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
Following in from this, as the fitter stormed out on me when I questioned what he had done, we deducted the cost of the upstands and installation from the invoice and paid the remainder as per advice from citizens advice, sending him an email to explain

He is refusing to acknowledge that his work was poor quality and is now trying to add extra items to the invoice which he claims he is owned for (including £20 to drive 2 miles to collect the legs for one of the units!).

Can anyone give any advice on this as I am beyond livid with what a cock he is being

Thanks in advance

High up in Tottenham Hotspur?? That's lost on me I'm afraid.

Formica is a laminate, good old school brand.

Labrador Black, right?

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
Do what everyone else does and go for Star Galaxy or Labrador Black.

Or be different and go for Bianco Carrara or Cimstone Arcadia.

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
I've been fitting kitchens for 15 years and they are all pretty much the same.
Benchmarx are good as gold and I prefer them to howdens, ikea are complete shit, B&Q's dearer range are good, cheaper ones are shit. Go and open up a cash account and see what they'll do, then like stoneman said try your independents. Some of these company's won't give you a floorplan unless you place an order with them so try and get a pic of it or memorise it.

Also the upstands can either be mitred on the internal/external joins or butted up, depends how you like it, I do a lot of new build stuff and they don't want the mitres on the edging. The ends should always be edged though.

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
When selecting kitchen work surfaces, is it acceptable to go for the more exotic Sri Lanka pink granite or do I have to use boring old Brazilian basalt again?

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
Corian is expensive.

Do yourself a favour, get yourself a quote from benchmarx and then take it to a local independent and they will not only beat the price but give you better quality of doors and carcasses.

Got a completely open canvas on my new kitchen, will check out Benchmarx.

Any others I should look out for or avoid?

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
Corian or Hi-macs worktops are good too

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
Quartz and Granite are similar prices, far better than laminate!

Naturally I am biased as it's my business 😉

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
Just revamping the kitchen now.... keeping the old Howden carcasses and doors as we still like them and they are still in top notch (admittedly I don't chuck them about from a foot mind you!!)... changing the work surfaces, getting a new Bosch hob (already bought that) fitted, new tap and sink and some plumbing work to move a waste pipe from behind the dishwasher to make more room.... MATE is doing the work... looking at around £900-00 for what we want... already bought Bosch Oven and Bosch Integrated Dishwasher that I have already fitted myself

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
stoneman is right about Howdens. Shit carcasses (15mm)

Your best bet is Benchmarx - basically Wickes (Travis Perkins) but 18mm carcasses already built and cheaper than any of that DFS-style spring/summer/autumn/extra 10% off this weekend bollocks you get from the others

Save your money there ad you might be able to add quartz worktops, which neednt be as much as you might think

Re: Any carpenters or kitchen fitters on here?
Howdens?

Shit.

Massive rip off!! How do I know? I spent 6 months managing a depot. The carcasses are appalling and the discounts vary from branch to branch. Each manager has sole control for profit in their depots so the more profit they make the bigger the bonus. I used to offer 80% discount and still made a huge profit. Drop one of their carcasses on its corner from a foot off the ground and watch it shatter! 👎👎

Seriously if you get a quote from them you can take it to your local kitchen company and they will beat it easily.

On your upstands point my area of expertise is granite and quartz so not overly familiar with the product but a simple mitre joint should have been done and the ends should have had a polished effect.
