Started supporting West Ham this year as a 9 year old, thought we challenged for the league title every season!

We do, it's just that most years the challenge is over by August Bank Holiday

The Smiths became 5 piece in 1986. That was never the real Smiths.

Bit stupid of them to do that thing with Frank McAvennie on London Bridge. Outside Fenchurch St station would've made more sense.

Re: 1986
may have been match of day for the Chelsea, I'm almost certain I recall being here on a normal Saturday 3pm

tv games from back then tend to stick in my mind as were so rare

anyone remember playing Man United on tv on a friday night? (think it was 2-2)

Eggbert Nobacon 1:40 Thu Dec 8
Re: 1986
that interview was 85 axeman

Charlton away in Cup was 5th Jan 86 and 100% live on tv

Man U at home in league was 2nd Feb 86 and also live

Re: 1986
The 1985–86 season was the 106th season of competitive football in England. ... the television rights meant no Football League action was seen by TV viewers until January 1986.

Re: 1986
Eggy

I don't think it was, i remember McAvennie doing an interview on London bridge to prove how unrecognisable he was even though he was top scorer in the league. Typical really our best ever year and no cunt saw it

Re: 1986
Pretty sure the 5-3 game was not on TV...

Ipswich (2-1) and the Forest (1-2) game were both on Sportsnight IIRC...

Eggbert Nobacon 12:58 Thu Dec 8
Re: 1986
was that on tv? I had in mymnd that as being a Saturday game

Or did you mean highlights? The ones Imentioned were all on live

Chelsea away 4-0 was on Match of the Day also

Re: 1986
The epic 5-3 vs Chelsea was in late 1986 too. What a match that was.

Re: 1986
Axeman

the ban was 85 and ended early 86 (wasn't our game against Charlton at palace the first on tv that season?)

We also had 3 games v Man United televised live in 86 (2-1 win in league Cottee and Ward)

1-1 ans 2-0 win in Cup

NS

That 2-1 Ipswich match had fans from lots of other London clubs, so they would have contributed to your lock out. I remember seeing some gooners going into the South Bank. Someone asked "What are you doing here?" and they just said they had to see if we could do it. At that point, they were rooting for us, just to see a London club challenge Merseyside for the title.
