Let's face it - using Latin to teach generations of posh cunts how to think about English may not not have been such a good idea after all.

"But when the pronoun becomes the object of the verb it changes to the accusative form."

This is just the kind of knot you tie yourself in when you try to apply Latin grammar to (modern) English.

There is no "accusative form" in English which is not just as much a "dative form".

The correct term in English grammar is "objective form", or, if you want to be old-fashioned, "oblique form".

You can distinguish between the functions these forms play, but the FORM is the same.

You really, really don't have to be able to speak Latin to be able to speak proper English.

Agreed Debs, far too much love and goodwill to all men and all that crap, it's turning into a mild sub forum of KUMB, so fuck everyone and hope you all have a miserable new year.....that feels better.

"Nominative and accusative forms are essential to the structure of Latin sentences, which is why I pointed out that a knowledge of Latin makes the use of pronouns a breeze in English."

The best way to learn something simpler is not to learn something more complicated first.

Or do you think schools should teach calculus before addition, so addition looks easy?

Given your previous post I have every reason to understand you were abused at school.

Now please explain why you reckon I am drunk.

Re: My wife and I or My wife and me
Dear God.

Look, let's have a simple grammar lesson shall we?

There is not a right version and a wrong version. One version is in the nominative form, the other in the accusative.

Nominative means the pronoun is the subject of the verb.

'My wife and I are going to the cinema tonight'
'My wife and I are going to France on holiday'
etc

But when the pronoun becomes the object of the verb it changes to the accusative form.

'The cinema emailed the tickets to my wife and me'
'That holiday was too expensive for my wife and me'

Nominative and accusative forms are essential to the structure of Latin sentences, which is why I pointed out that a knowledge of Latin makes the use of pronouns a breeze in English.

There are also vocative, genitive dative and ablative forms, but we'll leave those for another day.
