So what do we need for next season?

Hopefully I'm not getting ahead of myself but what do we need for next season? Plus I'm just talking about players here!
I think the players we already have lend themselves more to a back three than a back four. I think if we persisted with the 442/4411 then greater surgery is needed to make that work and too many round pegs and square holes IMO.
I think we'd need a pacey CB, a target man (sorry Andy, you're just too fragile), a mobile forward (Defoe is good for at least another season or so and probably free) plus a new goalie and I think it fits us much better and the attributes of the players we have.

Obviously the front three rotating depending on the striker you play. A target man will want crosses with the others looking for knock downs (Byram needs to work on his crossing) while a mobile striker will want balls fed into him to finish, could work well with Lanzini in that regard. Antonio can just do what he does and that batters people into submission.

This club needs a plan. It behaves like a gambler on pay day. When the money comes in at the end of the season or when we get our share of the TV rights contract, the owners go out and say "Look we have money" we can buy the best. The reality is that others clubs have bigger pockets and the draw of a player to West Ham with their bit of cash means we look like small fish in a big ocean.
This happened with Payet and other players coming tot he club. We buy a player give him higher wages and then those on the lower wage, who in most cases are the better performers start to get uptight. The club doesn't have the funds to balance the team so it hopes that their star investment does good. Truth is they don't and the club lose out.
This is why we need a plan. We need to aim for some way to get a good injection of cash in to the club. This should either be a good cup run, or a good run in Europe, otherwise the owners need to sell to someone who can invest more. We cannot always blame the manager or the players, the issues come from the top.

Not convinced of the idea of pushing fullbacks forward as wingers - struggling to think of many examples of it ever working. Especially cos in the modern game you really want wingers to be a flexible goal threat rather than hugging the line.

We need a huge upgrade on Randolph. We are ok at centre back. Reid, Ogbonna, Fonte, Collins, Burke, and Oxford are all good enough to play there.
I think Byram is good enough to play at right back (if he has a proper right midfielder in front of him not Feghouli) , and ideal for right wingback but we need another player to compete with him or cover him. We are ok at left back, but if we get a more defensive left back, we can push Creswell or Masuaku up to left midfield where we are hopelessly weak. We need another quality central midfielder and or a defensive midfielder. We need an upgrade on Feghouli at right midfield. I agree we need at least two possibly 3 strikers.
Out: Randolph, Arbeloa, Feghouli, Carroll, Tore, Calleri, Valencia, Sakho.
In: Pickford/Hart/Begovic
Zabaleta, Charlie Taylor
Oxlade Chamberlain/ Navas
Dale Stephens/Carrick
Will Hughes
Mandzukic and at least one if not two other strikers. Just please not Anthony Modeste.

I think you can add dm to list because as good as obiang has been this season, he still isn't athletic enough.
Noble is declining
Nord is a poor mans noble too slow for the prem
Kouyate isn't a good footballer.
I'd ship one of them out and look for a proper dm even if they are raw

If we are looking for cover at right back i'll throw in James Tavernier of Rangers. Watched him a few times this year very solid and weighs in with a few goals. Oh and he is English.

I think the way to deal with the striking problem at this stage has to be that the club just acts as if Carroll, Valencia and Sakho simply don't exist. If they leave then fine. If they stay and contribute then okay. But we shouldn't be arranging for them to leave before we bring in replacements as seemed to happen last Summer - the club has to be more flexible on that. It has to be prepared, if necessary, to simply write off those players.
I think we need three strikers next season - Fletcher can be the developing third option imo, with two strikers coming in. I don't think naming Carroll or Sakho as crocked options should be considered a solution.

Cresswell and Masuaka can compete, so this is ok
RB
Byram is a championship player, and Burke is a better option to gradually build.
Sell Byram and release Arsehole, and invest in at least one RB
CD
Ogbonna and Reid is our main defenders. Adding Collins and Fonte, and even Oxford, we should be strong enough in that position.
DM
Obiang is our main defensive midfielder with Noble, Nordtveit and Kouyate as backups. Should be enough.
AM
Lanzini is our best midfielder and can be partnered with Kouyate and Fernandes. We should look after a stronger AM with goals in him.
RM
Antonio and Feghouli. The latter should be sold and and investment to be done in a better replacement.
LM
Snodgrass,vand maybe Ayew. Super poor and need investment
Striker
Sakho, Carroll, Calleri, Ayew, Fletcher.
This means we have no strikers. Sell Carroll,vCalleriand even Sakho. Need heavy investment in two strikers.
Manager
Keep, but ifwe can replace him with Koeman etc then replace.
We need a massive investment, that's for sure!
