Oh I dunno Simon Holt and Aussie Jim McGrath give O'Sulliven a run for his money... both excellent...

Miss ol' Richie Benaud and the great Bill Mclaren

On Jonah Lomu: "I'm no hod carrier but I would be laying bricks if he was running at me."

... and his all time classic of `There's a bit of Argy Bargy' when it was kicking off on the field...

Re: Motson retiring after today.
Motty was a great commentator, very simple style with a few stats thrown in and for that reason I will miss him and that style of commentary. The new style of commentators are pretty much cunts, the ones on ITV most of BT and Sky and unfortunately MOTD are the same, too much to say for themselves, too self important and hugely opinionated on the slightest of decisions which ends up sounding like bias towards one team or another. Just a small for instance from out game at Leicester, Mario’s goal the commentator decided that Arnautovic had pushed Fuchs out of the way in getting the ball across, then during the slo mo even repeats it! Absolute bullshit, Just shut the fuck up and commentate on the game

That was Eddie Waring.

It was Kenneth Wolstenholme, Eddie Waring was a rugby commentator famous for his "oop and oonder" quote

My favourite Motson memory can be found by typing 'john motson-kuntz into you tube. Easier than me trying to explaun it. Very funny clip.

Sorry that's codswallop Hairyhammer. If you'd ever watched the VHS 'MOTD West Ham United' narrated and scripted by Motson you would know he has a great admiration and knowledge of the history of the club and it's traditions.

Re: Motson retiring after today.
Good luck to him he was one of the greatest voices for me in football Commentating and he loved the game too.
I think he is one of a dying breed his type will not come again.

Some may not have liked him if they met him apparently he is quite stand offish and pompous, and I have disliked nearly every game he commentated on in the last few years when West ham were playing because it is obvious that he has about as much enthusiasm for West ham as most West ham fans have for Millwall but still his voice will always remain in my mind ,oh and on FIFA games too.

Re: Motson retiring after today.
As regards World Cups etc I said.
Motson was given virtually all the big games.
Which I suppose is part of the reason Davies did other sports
He had a great job but would grate on anyone to be passed over for World Cup finals in favour of a dribbling inferior.

"Some people are on the pitch. They think it's all over! It is now!"

Classic Motson.
