If it is Pellegrini, how would we line up?
From a bit of back ground reading it sounds that of those linked he'd be the best fit for our fan base.

Acknowledged the English desire for direct but attacking football and with a desire for possession play but without over elaboration.

Favoured formation being 4-2-2-2, with two strikers, two inside forwards, full backs that bomb on, and deep lying midfielders that can fall into cover the full backs who are mobile and very tidy in their passing.

Looking at our squad, that suggests we are well covered in some areas, have holes in others, and have some players totally unsuitable.

Up front this could be manna from heaven for Hernandez, and Lanzini would have a very key role too. Arnie could be used either alongside Hernandez, but more likely in the withdrawn role alongside Lanzini.

The deep lying midfielders looks flakiest to me...perm 2 from Obiang, Rice and maybe Cresswell (who is mobile, passes well, and could cover Masuaku bombing on from fullback).

Antonio looks a square peg in a round hole in this setup unless reverting to attacking wing back, and Carroll doesnt fit the mold of mobile and fluid striker up front.

If it is Pellegrini it could be a very exciting season, although would probably swiftly highlight just how poor we've been until now.

My setup in 4-2-2-2 with what we have currently:

---------------Adrian

Zabaleta Kouyate Ogbonna Masuaku

---------------Rice Obiang

------------Lanzini--Arnautovic

------------Antonio Hernandez

It was disturbing to read in BBC gossip this morning that Sullivan thinks that having Pellegrini means we stand a good chance of signing 35yr old Yaya Toure; he's not learned!!!

Pellegrini, new players, new formations, new tactics, spending large sums of money.

We do realise that this is West Ham & the dildo bros + the fat cow Brady we're talking about here don't we?

Again, just saying..

I met him on Maddison avenue, New York, a few years back when he was manager with Man City and had them over there pre-season.

Seemed like a decent bloke.

Just saying..

any player who can't trap a ball and pick a pass without stopping to google how to do it won't get a look in.

kouyate and antonio head up that distinguished list.

Would love to see something like this in August. A mix of new signings and youth players making the step up. Hernandez given a run in the side. 2 new CMs - a mix of brains and brawn. Can hope and pray I spose

I suppose we'll find out how adventurous Moyes will be when he gets appointed as manager of a Premier League team any time now.

Re: If it is Pellegrini, how would we line up?
It’s really going to depend on what players he can bring in. You need the right players for any formation or system.

I’ve no doubt Moyes would have been a bit more adventurous with a bit more quality in defence and midfield to rely on.

Unless we spend decent money we will still have a suspect defence and a poor and one dimensional midfield, no matter who is picking the team and running training.

Re: If it is Pellegrini, how would we line up?
In Spain he generally played 4-2-3-1

But then he had the players to do it including Riquelme at Villareal and a young Isco at Malaga...never mind the Madrid lot

I just wonder if he yet understands we are not Manchester Coty and that he’ll be operating on a relative shoestring here.........

Re: If it is Pellegrini, how would we line up?
When Pellegrini arrives,no player in their right mind will be looking to leave.Don't think there is a player who has bad previous with him.
Zabaleta and Massuka are not good enough as full backs to make the starting 11,will be lucky to make the bench.
The 3 most important roles to fill are the full back positions and the dominant central midfield position. Then a commanding central defender. I feel we are fine going forward under the right manager who can make the most out of Lanzini,Arnie and Antonio. Hernandez and Mario can also be used against the right opposition. Carroll,as the goal against Stoke shows can also be better used than he has been. However I think a real "magic man" as our goal source is still needed. If it wasn't for his age Giroud would of been a great signing, think he will go on and score the winner in the WC final so can't be that bad. Thus a goalscorer like him who regularly puts the ball in the net. Pellegrini will have to come up with him through his vast network of players that he will surely have

Signings needed.

GK no1 or 2 £10M

RB £15M
LB £15M

CB £20M

CM £35M

CF £25M

other players £10M

Outlay £130M

Sold £50M

Can't see Pellegrini coming unless he has a large budget. If after all this talk so far he doesn't come this will be the reason why. A European spot is needed whether it is winning a cup or top 7 position

Re: If it is Pellegrini, how would we line up?
All speculative of course at the start of the transfer window and the new manager not officially appointed yet - but I think it could go something like this...

New GK
New RB Rice Ogbonna Arthur
Obiang New DM
Antonio Arnie Lanzini
Hernandez

Bench
Adrian, New CB, Zabaleta, New CM, New ST, New ST, Noble

Outs
Kouyate
Carroll
Byram
Snodgrass
Reid
Hugill
Oxford

Who knows who we can get in but I’m sure we can raise enough cash from the outs to add to the current kitty to make it sizable enough to have a real impact!

Re: If it is Pellegrini, how would we line up?
Agree with mostly what has been posted.

It seems that Pellegrini will not play 3 at the back at all so need to look at additions to the team to start playing 4 at the back with a bit of steel as protection in front.

Also this system will relegate Zab to the bench as a number 2 right back.

Kouyate and Noble are not enough proctection as the 2 players in front of the back 4, I think a fit Obiang is with another powerhouse DM coming in alonside him, Noble and Kouyate to squad players only.

Not convinced with Cresswell as a Pellegrini left back, squad for him I think with Arthur playing left wing.

Keep Adrian as number one for now with a good number 2 keeper to come in Callebrero at Chelsea type player.

Bring in another CB to challenge Rice, Ogbonna and Reid for 1 of the two starting berths, A Pellegrini special or a Mawson/Evans/Zouma type commanding cb.

Sign Mario or on loan again.

Need to sign a winger also to challenge Masuaku and Antonio on both wings.

Sell Oxford, Byram, Hugil and maybe Antonio to Palace (only if he wants to go).

Release Joe Hart, Ginge and Evra gone already, Cullen and Burke back out on loan.

Team - 4231

Adrian/new number 2

new RB/Zab Rice/Reid Ogbonna/new CB new LB/Cresswell
new DM/Noble Obiang/Kouyate
Antonio/Fernandes Lanzini/Mario Masuaku/new winger
Arnie/Hernandez/Carroll

So Pellegrini needs to sign in my opinion only:

A new right back to start
A new Left back to start
A number 2 keeper
A new CB to challenge Reid, Ogbonna and Rice
A powerhouse house DM to play alonside Obiang
A winger to challenge Antonio and Masuaku

Thats 6 players needed.

Outlay:

New right back : Fredericks free
New left back : Pelegrini Special 15 mill
New number 2 keeper : free
New right back 15 mill
New CB 20 mill
New DM 20 mill
Winger free/loan
sign Mario : 25 mill

Outlay 95 mill

recoup Oxford 20 mill
Hugill 10 mill
byram 8 mill

Thats 38 mill in

Total net spend:

57 Million

If he gets us playing 4-2-2-2, Arnie & Hernandez up front would be mouth watering.
