So, miraculously, I started off speaking French, and finished speaking English, without stopping speaking French?

Exactly -

That is code-switching - the continual process of taking from both languages.

gph 4:13 Tue Jul 3

Neither of those scenarios is code-switching. There was one language, a change of circumstance and then another language.

Throwing a term in at the end from another language is very common and does not change anything.

It is like using a Latin saying or having Doctor Who using "Allons-y" as his catchphrase for one incarnation. No one would call that code-switching.

Puerto Ricans are great at code switching between Spanish and English even in mid sentence also Zimbabweans will do the same, for instance they will start speaking in Shona language blah blah blah, then drop in something like "at de same time" blah blah blah

Taglish I assume is the same thing, Tagalog and English?

When I was a guest in Paris, along with a Russian, quite often I'd be talking with my two hosts in French*, and then we would switch to English when the Russian arrived as he had no French.

According to ioc, there are two completely different phenomena possible here - if we parted with a "goodbye", there is no question of any code switching at all, but if we finished with an "au revoir"... voila - code-switching.

Fuck knows what the first is called, but clearly there's a whole stream of research papers to be written on this entirely new topic in linguistics.

*because my French was in more need of improvement than their English

That is because it isn't.

"Code-switching" is, at the most basic level, alternating back and forth.

Re: FIBA World Cup Qualifiers turns into mass brawl...
It appears you are dense enough to believe that a lot of instances of changing code is code-switching, but one instance of a change of code is not code-switching.

'"Code-switching" is not a single "switch/cross over" in language, so your analogy is incorrect'

Are you setting up a "this is a wind-up" defence? Because you are not that dense.

Re: FIBA World Cup Qualifiers turns into mass brawl...
What, you can code-switch without making a single switch of code?

Ha. That was funnier to be fair.

I can't argue I am awful when I try to type fast.

Are we good now?

" It just make it look like this bother you a lot, which I hope it didn't."

I see what you did there. A nice example of code-switching between English and Spastic.

Mate, we argue here Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn't. But I thought we were done. I am not going to look for your posts and make "witty" personal fantasy retorts to them. It just make it look like this bother you a lot, which I hope it didn't.

I bet your old neighbours were delighted when you moved, ioc.

Probably held a street party.

"Code-switching" is not a single "switch/cross over" in language, so your analogy is incorrect.

So, if I walk along the road for, say, 30 seconds, and cross over, I have crossed the road.

But, if I walk along the road for "minutes" and cross over, I haven't crossed over.

Basketball? That's something we did in PE, a male version of netball. Should not be taken seriously and very tedious to watch.

Don't listen to them, ioc. I think it's an impressive skill to have to bore your way to victory (even the times when you're blatantly wrong).

You're the Allardyce of this board.
