Northern Decline
Had not realised until today when checking the fixtures for the new season just how relatively under represented the North is now in the Premier League.

The South has 10 teams (7 in and around London)
The North 7
Midlands 2
Wales 1

Although the North are likely to fill the top places again is this just the economics of modern football?

Re: Northern Decline
london clubs have always had an advantage,,especially in modern times.

Man Utd and Liverpool will always have a pull because of their respective histories..but even that is tested by the lure of London

oh and that the big money investors want to be closer to London to help launder some of that money.

Re: Northern Decline
The Norf have lost their Ned Stark in Alex Ferguson. Without him the pretenders have fallen.

The other thing is the South is becoming more Cosmopolitan meaning overseas players favour the South of England to the North.

Re: Northern Decline
Nothing to do with economics, just some shit Northern sides have managed to get out of the Championship and gone straight back down and further in some cases, or those who have managed to fluke a few seasons in the top flight have now taken up their rightful positions in the lower leagues.

Re: Northern Decline
When it comes to Northern Teams...historically there are some huge names - even if nowadays they don't have the same influence - due to industrial decline or otherwise...People do tend to forget that until fairly recently that Arsenal apart - most London clubs were a financial shambles too.

Anyway back to the North

Historically - Huge...but a long time ago

Aston Villa
Sheffield Wednesday
Sunderland

Then you had the surprise teams who had never really done anything of note until a legendary manager came along.

Derby, Leeds,Nottingham Forest

Then you get the ones who were associated with an area or rivalry who have never really done anything that was noteworthy.

Birmingham, Middlesboro, Stoke

About right?

Re: Northern Decline
London has always had five or six in the top league. Its the rise of the south coast teams (something i think that is temporary) versus the midlands and yorkshire,

Re: Northern Decline
Manchester and Merseyside apart there is a long list of big Northern teams that have gone out of the Prem and as yet failed to get back.

Sunderland
Middlesborough
Leeds
Sheffield Utd
Sheffield Wednesday
Blackburn Rovers
Bolton

All historically bigger than
Bournemouth
Brighton
Fulham?
Crystal Palace?

The Midlands may also be about to struggle if
Villa
WBA
Stoke
don't make it back this season.

Mind you I can't think of many Southern clubs to come up althouugh judging by the relegation thread people fancy Newcastle for the drop which will add to the North's problems

It's probably more to do with their being football clubs virtually around most corners in London.
