How long have you ever waited for a ambulance ?
Can anyone beat 5 1/2 hrs ?

Old lady aged 90 opposite me fell in her garden and on ringing 999 at 1 p.m and making the honest mistake stating she was breathing and talking we sat chatting until 6.30 p.m until it arrived.
No doubt a priority list needs to be in place but bloody hell leaving a old woman age 90 who had broke her hip that long is indefensible.

Then again any Tory's would like to defend it your more then welcome.

Well France is a left wing socialist country which is 3 times the size of UK with a similar population. They found that the best way to get people to and from hospitals that can be a greater distance away, was to privatise the ambulance service.

They are all modern vehicles and very efficient or they lose the work. No you don't pay anything as long as it's a genuine appointment and have no way of getting there yourself. When I was released from hospital they wouldn't allow me to go home in my wife's car as I needed to lay flat on my back for a few weeks.

Emergency services are responded to by police and a fire service with fully qualified and trained paramedics. I remember the UK wanted to update fire service to include paramedics a few years ago but the unions refused to accept change to firemen's job specs...

A couple of weeks ago, my wife's uncle had a heart attack and had to wait two hours! Had a stent fitted and is fine but if it was a major heart attack, fuck knows what would have happened.

Willtell - In France do you have to pay for an ambulance and are the waiting times as chronic as in the UK?

Re: How long have you ever waited for a ambulance ?
You have to look behind that "ambulances used as taxis" figure.

My old man, before he retired from retirement jobs, used to deliver poor old people to hospital in his car, his expenses paid by the NHS. If there were no volunteers were available, they'd go by ambulance.

If neither were available (never happened), they'd go without necessary medical care, choosing to spend the money on food, rent or heating.

I'm convinced that the reason the NHS struggles is because it is a free service at the point of delivery. Unfortunately, when anything is free, users and the staff providing the service have entirely different expectations.

Users demand the best and often can be impossible in their expectations while the staff work in an atmosphere of
a) not enough money
b) not enough time
c) I'll do it when I can...

It was ever thus in nationalised industries.

It's very different in France where you have to pay around 25% of the cost. Most get cover through their work but the cost is a fraction of the typical BUPA prices. Mind you so is the cost of staying in a French hospital for a week as I did after a big operation 5 year ago. The whole thing including ambulance cost under €5000 and the room alone was charged at €40 a night for a large private room with en suite, TV and 3 meals a day!!!!

My wife called one for me last year when I fell on the stairs... really thought I was a goner, couldn’t breathe and thought I must have punctured a lung but turned out to be muscular!

Anyway, took the ambulance 40mins which I wasn’t very impressed with.

I heard the other day a stat that said ambulances being used as taxi's is costing NHS around £9m per year.

Not massive amount in grand scheme but still a piss take.

There's been a series on the BBC called Ambulance and it follows crews around the West Midlands. The Para Medics are absolute heroes with the patience of saints.

They're seriously understaffed and some patients have to wait 6 - 8 hours for an ambulance as the 999 calls they get are relentless.

Some are habitual callers but the Ambulance still has to turn up just in case. Even though it's the 6th or 7th time that day.

If you hurt yourself whilst drunk and need an ambulance, the service should charge, as Friday and Saturday nights are mayhem. And while mopping up some pissed up farts blood there's a bloke having a heart attack with no Ambulance available.

I've only ever called an ambulance once and arrived in 3-minutes. When little Miss Oh Dear put her hand through a window.

Not good enough!!

Fucking useless Tory Cunts, I want one parked on my drive permanently in case I need another one and I demand that is there within two minutes.

Fucking hell, Labour supporters are more boring than a team managed by Allardyce!!!

Longest wait I've witnessed was when Labour were in power.

1 hour for a colleague who broke his leg playing football in our lunch break. Was just off Bishopsgate. He took the wait well to be fair, not a whimper from the spurs cunt.

Shortest wait was when my mum had a stroke in front of me and the ambulance was there in under 2 mins. That was under the current government.

Re: How long have you ever waited for a ambulance ?
A few years back my youngest was showing some symptoms of meningingitis. I called 111 initially just to make sure i wasnt panicking unnecessarily and they decided to call an ambulance. After waiting about 20 minutes before going into megs panic overdrive i decided to ring 999 to see what was going on and they had no record of 111 having contacted them. Luckily she just had a virus. 20 minutes though it doesnt sound a lot is a huge amount had it been serious.

Worse still had she been that serious and i hadnt checked, couldnt believe the 111 operator could be so stupid.

My father in law was released from hospital to a residential facility for physiotherapy but on taking his oxygen count the charge nurse said that he should have never been released from hospital and rang for an ambulance. It was 23rd December and he waited for over seven hours because pissheads were falling over in their droves and took priority over him. He died a week later.

Re: How long have you ever waited for a ambulance ?
a big girl (must have been 25 stone of her) fell over at work and popped her knee out. She was in shock, sweating like a wossname and in obvious pain so we called an ambulance. The ambulance spoke with her and then decided they weren't going to come out. I had to borrow a wheelchair from Sainsbury's to get her out of the office, we were on the first floor, and into someone's car. Took about half a dozen of us......

When I lived in one of the more salubrious parts of Manchester, I found an unconscious junkie in my back garden.

The ambulance took about ten minutes, and they managed to bring the druggie back to life.

But the driver said he wished he had taken a bit longer...

Re: How long have you ever waited for a ambulance ?
I seem to recall being taught as a kid, if you even suspect it's an emergency, call the services as they are more than happy to respond to a false alarm rather than miss a genuine case.

That all seemed to change with bean-counters taking over management AND the arrival of people in the country without such an osmosised social history (as mine).

The result being a contemporaneous reduction in supply and increase in demand of such services - and the local people losing out - again.
