The Monster?
Was a Sullivan signing apparently, fair play if so, all these working late nights finally paying off?

I think I'm right that tmkt valuations are basically voted on by the site's users. I don't ever look at them - I consider them worthless.

Well, I can't lie! I'd like to think I mostly own up if I'm proven to be wrong about something....

more worthless than a site that says kane's market value is €200m?

Re: The Monster?
so using their criteria it's easy to see why he would be lowly valued by them as a player at struggling Toulose

I imagine they'd have valued Rio Ferdinand at about 2m had they been around back then

Fully agree. And I have issues myself with cies's methods. But it is a system that is public facing that we can assess and think about.

Re: The Monster?
looking at this - their transfer calculator

http://www.football-observatory.com/Transfer-Value-Calculator

they only criteria used are

General information
Age
Position
Contract end

Matches
Goals
Country
Level
Points per match

Seems ridiculously simple, the sort of thing a ZX Spectrum Football manager game form the 80's might have done

Different clubs, different players. I still believe £20m+ signings are probably too much risk for us. While £30m to Man Utd is pretty close to irrelevant. Shaw was one of the best performing left-backs in the league when Man Utd bought him. Diop was a very undistinguished player in a struggling team in L1 as far as I can tell.

I asked that yesterday, Bernie, and he swerved it.

I'm almost certain if it were Toulouse buying him from us for that price he'd be arguing that we didn't get enough, and that CIES site valuation is utter nonsense.

story here from March with the now confirmed Barcelona, Spurs and Arsenal interest, I can't imagine is club would have been selling for 8m at that stage can you?

Let's make it easy for you, and stop everyone getting all excited over this (including me)

How much did you think Diop was worth before we bought him and how did you come to that conclusion.?

>>> so he IS worth 28m like they say?

They have a system that gives players values. I consider it food for thought. If there's a better source for such information I'd be happy to hear about it.

and his is more than we paid for him?

great move then by anyones standards surely?

Re: The Monster?
Alex - I'm generally respectful of your alternate views, appreciating that you at least try to explain your rationale, but I'm not sure where you're headed with this. A few years agom when Man Utd signed Luke SHAW for £30 million, you ventured that it was worth it because he would likely be their left back for the next ten years.

SO I'm not sure how you could argue that Diop, at a lower price, could be overpriced given that you could make the same argument - and the alternative is that we will recoup a large amount of th fee, if not make a substantial profit?

So on what basis are you judging us to have overpaid, if you can't measure alternatives?

>>> Surely the whole point of hindsight is to adjust your reasoning. You should obviously take into consideration how well he's done when considering if we overpaid or not.

All sorts of problems with that imo. What is £22-30m worth of positive outcome? How do we measure? Over what period? What do we put down to luck rather than judgement? What part do injuries play? How do we measure the alternatives, given we can't use hindsight to measure options we didn't take?

I'd say hindsight is the most useful tool when considering if you overpaid or not

Re: The Monster?
>>> and on reflection of how well the player is doing, you're happy to stand by the 'massively overpaid' comment with Diop

Yes because I'm criticising the quality of the decision made in the Summer. I'm not looking to justify it with hindsight, which I consider entirely faulty reasoning.

Surely the whole point of hindsight is to adjust your reasoning. You should obviously take into consideration how well he's done when considering if we overpaid or not.
