If one of our midfield three were to get injured....
We have got pretty much zero cover for central midfield, as it stands. Attacking or defending.

Slightly worrying.

Let's start another thread......if two of our keepers got injured.

Pointless

Your spot on Alf but do you seriously think those two old cunts are going to sanction that kind of spend, never in a million years.
It will be interesting to see how Pelligrini reacts if a regular decent budget isn't available.

As many of us have been saying, one decent transfer window will not be enough. Need to spend 50 to 100 million for a few windows to get the squad depth and quality and spend it well too. Easy to spend a lot of money on the wrong players. Rice looks to have solved the holding role but unlikely it was a planned thing and we need better back up / alternatives if he is unavailable.

But we also need better first team options to Arfur/Cresswell at LB, Zab at RB ( in a season or so his age will catch up) although maybe Fredericks can be coached to defend?

We also need a goal scorer alternative to Arnie.

I'd like to see Diangana given his chance to see what he can do in the PL. He can play deeper than he did against Macclesfield and also centrally.
Pity he wasn't on the bench on Friday night when our two wide men failed to impress.

Re: If one of our midfield three were to get injured....
I was thinking this on Friday, basically our back ups and reserves are not good enough hence why we have been in the shit over the past year or so.

Our top performers this season have been:

Arnautovic
Yarmalenko
Anderson
Rice
Diop
Balbuena
Fabianski

5 of 7 are new signings with Rice also practically a new signing as a holding midfielder. If 4 or 5 of those are injured / suspended at the same time we would be in big trouble.

Re: If one of our midfield three were to get injured....
Well we have 3 first team CM's injured, 2 that we arguably in the first 11 at the start of the season and maybe even all 3. If another one gets injured then we'll just have to take it on the chins.

You can't really allow space in your transfer budget to consider 4 first team CM's injured at the same time.

As others have mentioned, it'll be over to the kids

Re: If one of our midfield three were to get injured....
most important is options for the pivot/dm role, obiang could slot in there and possible conor coventry if both ob & rice are missing. the left & right side of the three are much easier to fill

Re: If one of our midfield three were to get injured....
Three central midfielders are injured so, yes, that's an area that is stretched right now. 'Zero cover' is not true, as there is lots of potential cover, it's just less of a known quantity than the more senior or regular picks.

Hopefully Wilshere won't be too long out.

Snoddy can play there.

If worse come to worse we push Arnie into a deeper role and put Perez up front. Or we go 4-4-2.

But yeah, not the best situation. And people were negative when we brought Sanchez in but now he is out it raises concerns. So just goes to show.

Zabaleta I guess would go there, he did well in a match there last season and played there at times for City too

not ideal but not sure we have any other options

Re: If one of our midfield three were to get injured....
The advanced position is probably ok. There are others who can step in. The defensive position(s) are the worry ones. It was our weakness before Pellegrini found the solution and it probably will be again if Rice or Obiang go down.

The 100 million plus spend up bought us a good team, we need several more high investment windows to get us a decent squad, at the same time offloading dross like Carroll

With the international break, Wilshire won't be far off, and I'd think Snodgrass would be next in line to play centrally.

Also this manager wouldn't be scared of sticking the youth players in.

i agree- all this optimism however we are a bad injury away from a fucking dearth of replacements.

Lets hope we have had all the injuries we are going to have there. I assume Snodgrass would be cover. Shame Oxford has lost his way as it would have been an opportunity for him too.

Are Joe Powell and Conor Coventry injured then?
