No stadium sale, insist Mayor's Office

A spokesman for the Mayor's Office says that any hopes West Ham fans harbour of the stadium being sold to the club are fanciful, at best.

Ever since West Ham sold the Boleyn Ground and moved to rented accommodation in Stratford two years ago, United fans have discussed the possibility of the club eventually owning the ground and making it feel like 'home'.

However that is little more than a pipe dream according to a spokesman for the Mayor's Office, who laughed off suggestions that the club could eventually own the stadium and take control of its various revenue streams.

"I can confirm that the Mayor's position remains the same; the London Stadium is a public asset and will stay in the ownership of the taxpayer," wrote the spokesman in reply to a query from a KUMB member.

"The Moore Stephens report, the independent review commissioned by the Mayor last year, said that the process could not be rushed, the contracts are complicated, and it would take time to work through the issues which is exactly what LLDC are doing - but progress is being made."

The spokesman also confirmed that the LLDC were continuing to examine other ways of reducing their deficits, which currently stand between £15-£20million per annum, outside of their relationship with West Ham.

"LLDC have significantly reduced the cost of the seat moves and are looking to make further efficiencies here; they are working with the stadium operators to reduce the high operating costs," they continued.

"LLDC are also working to maximise the commercial opportunities by staging events beyond the Premier League and they are looking to address naming rights as well as the fees paid by both of their main concessionaires.

"The stadium is not just a football venue. The venue is already one of the best multi-use stadiums in the world and LLDC are working to maximise the commercial opportunities it creates to reduce the burden on the taxpayer in the long-term.

"Premier League football aside, the multi-use venue has already hosted some of the biggest athletics meets in the world, Premiership Rugby Union, the Rugby World Cup and a range of concerts by some of the world's most popular artists like the Rolling Stones, Jay Z, Beyonce and the Foo Fighters.

"Next year will see Major League Baseball played at the venue between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, a first for the UK."

It doesn't matter who the actual owner is those multi-use events can still go ahead.

Got to be sold at some point to Private Sector as Public Sector ownerships will never be profitable and it's no Public Asset if its loss making!

Long term the stadium will 100% be sold.

Not on Khan's watch certainly, but he is just an elected official and someday he will be voted out or resign.

New mayor, especially if it is a Tory will blame all the problems on Khan/Johnson and say the best thing do do for the public purse is to cut their losses by selling it.

Who they sell it to is another question, but if our contract is as restrictive as has been rumoured then we could well be the only game in town...

The fact they spend GBP4m/annum arguing with us and losing dosn't say much for their business acumen.

Even the Tories don't think they will win the next Mayoral election. And you can take that to the bank.

He won't be mayor for much longer.

So take what he says with a pinch of salt.

'A public asset', that they are running into the ground. The trouble with the mayor is that he labours under the delusion that politicians and civil servants make good businessmen. They don't. That's why what should be a cash cow is being run at a massive loss.

Any sale could be structured to ensure the public purse benefits from future events at the stadium.

What we have here now is a clash of wills between the Mayor and GSB - a relationship as poisonous as it is ruinous.

All a fucking mess of GSB's creation.

Without a doubt they need new operators to make it work.
LLDC are money grabbing jokers that could not organise the proverbial piss up in a brewery.

wouldn't be much bidding with us as sitting tennant on a lease that apparently makes it impossible for them to make money

we would likely be the only bidder
