Apparently, 100,000 people have signed up to learn Valyrian on Duolingo.

I'm not joking either.

"Xie xie peng yuo"

Are we supposed to guess what means?

It seems too short for "where can I find an underaged prostitute?"

Mandarin...
Pin Yin...phonetic pronunciation...using Alphabet...
Forget about learning characters except for a few basic ones you might need when you're out and about in China.
Any good cd/DVD basic course is good...learn while driving etc...cds...
I learned about two hundred words including number system about 20 years ago... can't remember half of them now but not difficult...
Xie xie peng yuo...

I'm so shit at languages it hurts. Takes me an eternity to remember simple phrases. I think being tone deaf and not even trusted to keep time with the triangle in the primary school band were an early sign pointing towards total failure. I can talk utter shit in French and Japanese and that's it.

The kid has been exposed to Eng er lish and Japanese since day one and is musical and has a half decent singing voice.

She's been learning 🐸lish and ze Deutsch for a few months and is smashing both without even trying really hard.

I'm learning Portuguese using the app Duolingo. It's very good for vocab. Almost more like playing a game than learning.

I also used Memrise, which I quite liked.

Not a language course, but I enjoy the Serpentza vlogs on life in China.

Michel Thomas courses are pretty good for spoken language, but you won't be able to read much by the end.

I'm using the Russian one, but they do do a Mandarin one.

Russian seems to take a perverse delight in being complicated, as I've seen from textbooks, but the MT lot are good at finding the bits that are both useful and simpler

We were in a tidly restaurant after football practice and one of the team let off a loud fart.

The Chinese bloke standing by the door turned and said: "ahh fahhhck you."

Plenty of free language courses on youtube. Not as good as being around native speakers, but it's a start.

Any menu put through yr letterbox translates most things. It’s a start, costs nothing and just rip it in half if you get the arse ache with it.
