Chania is the nicest town. Go to the mountains and the south for authentic rural Crete.

Re: Crete
10thofMay, didn't the Germans first use paratroopers (Fallschirmjaeger) in the Norwegian campaign?

Sorry FC, you're quite right. It was one of those facts you hear and assume is correct.

I did look it up and it was the first use of paratroopers en masse but it's still not the first use!

"The Battle of Crete was the first occasion where Fallschirmjäger (German paratroops) were used en masse, the first mainly airborne invasion in military history, the first time the Allies made significant use of intelligence from decrypted German messages from the Enigma machine,[14][15] and the first time German troops encountered mass resistance from a civilian population.[16] Due to the number of casualties and the belief that airborne forces no longer had the advantage of surprise, Adolf Hitler became reluctant to authorise further large airborne operations, preferring instead to employ paratroopers as ground troops.[17][18] In contrast, the Allies were impressed by the potential of paratroopers and started to form airborne-assault and airfield-defence regiments."

Re: Crete
Never been, although I recall a couple of mates going to Heraklion in the 80s, they shared a room (two singles) to keep the cost down as in early twenties and skint. Went out drinking and one pulled so the other left him to it went back to the apartment.

Later pissed up he brought her back and started to give her a rogering on his bed which woke his mate, halfway through he had to run for the bog to chunder, he returned to find his mate balls deep!

SofH,

We did experience a bit of that at a party for two Greek pilots who came home from the Gulf War. Crazy but brilliant evening.

10thofMay......i think their men folk still use it as an excuse to go up in the hills and fire off their guns whilst getting pissed.......they are STILL that bitter over it.

Re: Crete
Knossos is well worth a visit.

Also, little known fact, Crete was the place where the first use of paratroopers took place, They were German unfortunately. there is a cemetery near to where you're staying and I think a museum ( i went in 1990).

The Germans didn't behave very well during the war on the island and they're not well liked (at least not in 1990!)

Went in 93, but can't remember anything about it, but didn't go to Malia. Not sure if that will help.
