Guardian Rumour Mill

Niall McVeigh

Is this really the end? According to sources perilously close to the nest of yellowing newspapers The Mill calls its office, Eden Hazard is hours away from joining Real Madrid. So ends a saga that began in 2010, when Zinedine Zidane first clapped eyes on the bootylicious Belgian. You’ve got to admire Zizou’s commitment to the long game.

But where does that leave us? Your trusty Mill has been subsisting off morsels from the Hazard-to-Madrid bandwagon for nigh-on five years. Thankfully, plenty of the transfer market’s other usual suspects remain very much active. Not least David de Gea, who this very morning has been linked with PSG.

According to ESPN FC, the Parisians are in the market for a declining keeper, with Gigi Buffon hightailing it after just one season. Potential replacements for De Gea at Manchester United range from the ambitious – Gianluigi Donnarumma, Jan Oblak – to the realistic – current backup Sergio Romero, or Dean Henderson, who impressed on loan at Sheffield United.

Hazard looks set to be joined at Real Madrid by Christian Eriksen, who delivered the most direct come-and-get-me plea ever seen outside the Uber app. That means Spurs could be stepping back into the transfer market, blinking and disorientated. They’re getting ready to hijack Manchester United’s slow-burning move for Bruno Fernandes, and also like the look of two Roma talents: winger Cengiz Under and playmaker Nicolò Zaniolo.

The pair would likely set Tottenham back a cool £70m, and they could blow what’s left of the Eriksen cash on PSV winger Steven Bergwijn. If Hazard and Eriksen go on to form the silkiest duo since Charles and Eddie, that would be very bad news for Gareth Bale. The Welsh winger has thus far resisted Florentino Pérez’s attempts to bundle him out of the Bernabéu, but might change his tune now Antonio Conte’s Internazionale are keen.

Across north London, Arsenal are already up to their neck in transfer speculation, only a week after that night in Baku. The latest crumbs being proffered in their direction include Belgian winger Yannick Carrasco, and 2014’s Mario Götze. Unai Emery might also be saying “good evening” to River Plate midfielder Exequiel Palacios.

According to the Metro, the young River Plate midfielder appears keen on a move, saying: “I’m proud clubs like Real Madrid and Arsenal are interested in me.” What was that first bit again? Ah. In somewhat surprising other news, Sead Kolasinac is being linked with Barcelona. The Catalan chokers are also dangling right-back Nelson Semedo in front of Atlético Madrid, in hope of warming up their pursuit of Antoine Griezmann.

Elsewhere, West Ham may move for Isaac Hayden as a cut-price alternative to André Gomes, Southampton are circling Standard Liège winger Moussa Djenepo and Schalke want to lure Everton’s Jonjoe Kenny to the Bundesliga.

Aston Villa are keeping it strictly Midlands, hoping to add Wolves’ Kourtney Hause and on-loan Derby defender Fikayo Tomori after signing Birmingham forward Jota on Wednesday. Finally, Slaven Bilic could be the new manager at West Brom, and his first order of business will be keeping Jay Rodriguez from the clutches of Marcelo Bielsa, his big blue bucket and Leeds.

Who is Alexis Claude-Maurice? The £10m forward chased by West Ham and Arsenal

The Hammers have reportedly lodged a bid for the highly-rated forward

By Sam Inkersole West Ham correspondent

West Ham have reportedly made a £10m bid for Lorient forward Alexis Claude-Maurice, who turns 21 today (Thursday) as Manuel Pellegrini looks to France to bolster his midfield.

The Hammers are keen to add another midfielder to the ranks this summer, having seen an £18m bid for Portugal star Andre Gomes rejected by Barcelona and have returned with the second bid believed to be £20m. However, the expectation is that Gomes will sign permanently for Everton who he spent last season on loan with.

Hammers boss Pellegrini is seemingly keeping his options open with an exploratory bid for Claude-Maurice as well as keeping tabs on Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden, who wants to leave Newcastle and move back down south to be closer to his family.

But it's Claude-Maurice's name that is the latest to be mentioned with a move to east London and he seemingly fits the bill as he is young, relatively cheap in cost and could easily double his wages in London with the Hammers still remaining well within an acceptable limit on their wage bill.

But who is Claude-Maurice? He is not exactly a household name unless you are an avid follower of French football.

He is a France U20 international midfielder who can play on either the left wing or in central areas. The 20-year-old plays his football for French Ligue 2 side FC Lorient, he has played 35 league games this season scoring 14 goals and providing a further four assists as his side finished sixth in 2019/20.

The right-footed midfielder has made his way through the youth team at the French club, making his breakthrough during the 2018/19 season where he scored three times in 20 league appearances.

His form and goalscoring record during the 2018/19 season means that he looks set to make the move to a higher level and he has been regularly scouted by Arsenal over the course of the last 12 months.

He's been rated by some as one of the best young prospects in France for his position and while he has often played out wide during his very fledgling career so far, his future may well lie in a more central position.

Claude-Maurice might not be an automatic starter in east London if he were to join but he could certainly would fill the gaps in the squad that have been vacated by the departures of Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez, providing stern competition to Michail Antonio on the right of Pellegrini's preferred front three.

We've already seen Pellegrini raid France for young talent and he isn't afraid to pay either, signing Issa Diop for a former club-record fee last summer from Toulouse who went on to have an excellent debut campaign in the Premier League.

West Ham issue transfer message to Olympiakos over Kostas Fortounis deal

WEST HAM have told Olympiakos they are prepared to pay £15m for Greece midfielder Kostas Fortounis.

By Paul Brown

But the Hammers will not be held to ransom over the 26-year-old, with Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden still their preferred choice to bolster the engine room.

West Ham are looking to add at least one midfielder this summer as a priority, along with a defender and a striker.

But Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini has limited funds available unless he can sell players.

Fortounis, an attacking midfielder who has also played up front, had 12 goals and nine assists in 28 Greek Super League games last season.

West Ham opened talks to sign him weeks ago. But they are not prepared to break the bank for the 42-cap Greece star, who is entering the final year of his contract.

West Ham’s £20m bid for Barcelona misfit Andre Gomes remains on the table but he is expected to sign for Everton instead.

And Hayden, who is attractive to the Hammers because he would add to their homegrown player quota, is regarded as the preferred alternative.

The Hammers have also entered talks over a new contract for Manuel Lanzini, whose current deal runs out next summer.

Lanzini, 26, returned from a cruciate ligament injury to make ten appearances last season in the Premier League and is wanted by Fenerbahce.

Calciomercato Rome: the Giallorossi continue to keep an eye on West Ham's Obiang

While waiting for Petrachi to be freed by the president of Torino Cairo, the Lecce manager, who will take the place of Massara, who yesterday consensually resolved the contract that bound him to Rome, seems to be already operating for the Giallorossi club. In fact, after the meeting he had with the CEO Fienga with the agent of Paulo Fonseca to convince the Portuguese to accept the Romanist bench, the former grenade executive is already moving on the market together with his right hand Cavallo to reinforce the neighbor year. As reported by the newspaper on newsstands today, goal number one is a goalkeeper, while in midfield it is kept an eye on Obiang of West Ham.

Operation exit in Alavés: Maripán approaches West Ham

Two of the mainstays of Deportivo Alavés last season under the command of "Pitu" Abelardo, Guillermo Maripán and Jony Rodríguez are going to change airs this summer, the Chilean transferred to West Ham and the fast Asturian end to Lazio, according to today's Italian medium Corriere Dello Sport.

Another player who will not wear the zamarra albiazul next season is Guillermo Maripán, who is concentrated with his team, before the Copa América dispute. The center back has already admitted that his desire is to play next season in the Premier League and he likes the project of his compatriot Manuel Pellegrini.

West Ham has presented to Deportivo Alavés a new offer, of 15 million euros, to take over the services of Maripán for the next season. 3.5 million euros more than the first offer of the London team to the Albiazules. However, the Deportivo Alavés continues to refer to the player's clause 25 million euros, still far from the offer of the "Hammers".

Player keen on transfer to West Ham, and Hammers are in talks with agent

Aksam claims Fenerbahce left back Hasan Ali Kaldirim is interested in playing in the Premier League at this stage of his career and he’s considering joining West Ham United this summer.

The 29 year old reportedly doesn’t want to pass up the chance to join the London club and he’s now hoping both sides can reach an agreement. It could be the player’s last opportunity for such a move.

It’s claimed West Ham are prepared to meet his buyout clause of €5m, although his agent has revealed to the Turkish press he doesn’t have this written into his contract.

It was first reported in the English press that West Ham are interested in signing the Fenerbahce captain and now Aksam reports he’s keen on a move to London. There were also claims the Hammers are in talks with the player’s representatives regarding a potential transfer.

Kaldirim made 41 appearances for Fenerbahce last season, scoring three goals. He is under contract with the Super Lig club until June 2020.

Aston Villa and West Ham ‘serious’ on player, as club look to raise money this summer

L’Equipe’s big Thursday transfer special will lead to endless claims around the European sport media, with English clubs getting many mentions.

The French newspaper go through Ligue 1 sides one by one, and when it comes to Angers, both Aston Villa and West Ham United get a mention.

Angers are looking to renew their attacking options, which is something the club have been trying to get right for a while in the transfer market. They’ll also be looking to raise funds, and it’s not only in the striking positions that changes will be made.

Midfielder Baptiste Santamaria is said to be attracting ‘serious’ interest from Aston Villa, West Ham and Serie A side Fiorentina. His contract runs until June 2022, and a potential transfer fee for the 24 year old is put at €6-8m.

Last season he made 40 appearances in a defensive midfield role.

There’s no further information on any approaches or offers from any of the clubs named as keen.
