Silverwood gets the gig
Thank fuck that that 'inspite of' rather than 'because of' Bayliss is history. Silverwood has the job, no doubt McGrath's days at Essex are probably coming to an end soon. Reckon #27 Ten DOESCHATE might become player coach for next season if Silvers wants his mate Mags on board.

Does Chris know we won’t be using the Tiflex ball in Test cricket and the opposition won’t have all their best players unavailable every week?

Well obviously the most important part of cricket coaching is how good you are at powerpoint presentations.
Sort of sums up British management culture.

Re: Silverwood gets the gig
The cricinfo guy who said Silverwood was back as favourite last week and seemed to have the inside knowledge reckons Kirsten gave an ‘underwhelming presentation’.

COULD have been that he refused to wear a Hundred Crisp Packet shirt while doing it.

Re: Silverwood gets the gig
Latest rumour is Kirsten made that fatal interview mistake of being completely honest and told them that the hundred was a fucking shit idea.

Re: Silverwood gets the gig
Imagine he will use the NZ tour to check things out rather than make any changes.
Root might be on trial without actually knowing it
He also will have ideas on players but has been presented with a squad here.

Re: Silverwood gets the gig
Yep, I'm pretty happy with Silverwood's appointment.

It was either him or Collingwood - and I've preferred the latter, but been content with either.

Silverwood is a decent coach. What he needs now is to sit down with his "skipper" and determine whether Root is the man to lead the test side forward. He shouldn't just automatically approve of Root as the captain. If he feels he wants a different skipper, he should opt for one (can't really think who it could be, only a few candidates). If not, back Root, but pressure him to improve.

Then he needs to get his coaching staff on board.

Then he needs to have a proper battle with the ECB over how the selectors operate - and who they are.

Re: Silverwood gets the gig
whether it works or not, happy with the appointment.

There has to be a visible pathway for coaches, especially English coaches, going into that field.

Silverwood's progression has been textbook - bowling coach at Essex, head coach at Essex, winning Div 2, winning the Championship, moving to England to be bowling coach, and now into the top job. Sends the right message through the game about what's achievable if you do well.

Re: Silverwood gets the gig
Personally I think the ICC should insist that the national coaches of major Test nations should be from those nations. The same qualification process as for players.

England have gone round the houses and probably landed in the right place
Silverwood was the early favourite but was said the ECB got cold feet as was/is a ‘nervy press performer’.
Alec Stewart was favourite until he withdrew when he realised not all Test matches are played at The Oval.
Gary Kirsten wanted to do red OR white ball. Until he got the sack from the IPL then wanted both. Became the favourite until he apparently gave an atrocious presentation to the board.

So it’s over to Silverwood

Lets hope his first act is to appoint a new captain.

Re: Silverwood gets the gig
Negative thinking but I can see McGrath leaving Essex to become Silverwood's assistant with England. The coaching set up that steered Essex to the Division 2 title, two County Championships and a T20 Blast title gone!

Daniel Lawrence will probably soon be given a chance then.

Hands off Silverwood!!!
